    Hamish!! HELP!...or anyone from Ireland

I've been tapped as someone who might be responsible for taking the Lord Mayor of Dublin, his wife, the Irish Consul and a mess of VIP's from Dublin around Stanford on a tour in March.

How it all came about is a long story, but San Jose, California and Dublin, Eire are sister cities. The delegation won't be able to attend my concert on campus on Saturday night, but apparently they're interested in a visit to Stanford. I got the SJ-D sister city board in touch with the appropriate people here at Stanford, and they've come back to me and said..."well, YOU started it!".

I've got a couple of mates...a professor of Irish-American Literature and the guy in the Library who is the curator of the Modern Irish Literature collection tapped to help me out, but hosting the Lord Mayor is a **Big Deal** I understand.

Gaaaa! Should I wear a saffron kilt? I don't want to come off as a "wanna-be" but I've got no reason to NOT wear a kilt. Would it be appropriate? Would the Lord Mayor and/or a bunch of businessmen from Dublin have a clue what the saffron kilt actually is, or would they just think it was wierd?

How to get a saffron kilt in 5 weeks???

I think that blue jeans and a t-shirt is not going to cut it.

    Lord Mayor of Dublin...

Wow, Alan! That's pretty impressive! Meeting the Lord Mayor of Dublin & other dignitaries.

I would imagine that the Lord Mayor & his party would be familiar with the saffron kilt and kilts in general, however, I would suggest the Irish National Tartan. The Scottish Lion has kilts in the Irish National available for rent (along with the full evening attire):

    http://www.scottishlion.com/kiltrentals.html

You might see if the Scottish Lion (or another kilt rental place) would rent just the kilt.

I'm sure there are other places that have it available as well. The Irish National Tartan would be a nice touch, and would make a nice "conversation starter", since you would be wearing it in honour of the Lord Mayor's visit.

    Cheers,

    Todd

I imagine the Lord Mayor would have a clue what a saffron kilt is about. As for getting one in 5 weeks, beats hell out of me.

Yeah, that might work out. There are a number of places where I can get an Irish National kilt reasonably quickly. I figured the saffron kilt would be that much more traditional, but I might have to opt for the tartan one, if it comes to that.

    Crikey!

    Dublin...

    Alan,

    For reference, check out:

    http://www.somebody.to/irishkiltclub.htm

The web page of the Irish Kilt Club -- a lot of good stuff on all things relating to Irish kilts.

Whilst the Irish National Tartan isn't that old, I think it would go over very well, and would be easier to get ahold of quickly -- besides, it's such a strking tartan, and would be easlier to "accessorize" than the saffron would.

And that's my 1000th post!

    Cheers,

    Todd

    Saffron Kilts

I believe that you can get an Irish Kilt from Kilt and Thistle up (for you) in Salem, OR. They are located at www.kilts.com . Take a look. They might be able to help you out. Best of luck.

I've been to the Kilt and Thistle several times. They are fairly traditional and business is never bustling with them, so they may be of good help. However, I was distinctly unimpressed with their prices and know-how.

I'll give them a call if this all works out. The irish national tartan is very, well...*green*..which is sort of not my thing I'm afraid. I'd rent a saffron kilt if I could.
