wallace tartans
I have read that the only Wallace tartan that is actually recognized by the chief of clan Wallace is the wallace red. The wallace hunting I was reading about says that only under duress that they acknowledge the wallace hunting green. Can anyone clarify for me, what this actually means exactly?
Thanks
Mike

This article from Matt's blog about the tartans of Clan MacNeill should explain the similar situation with the Wallace tartans:

From the Clan Wallace Website
The Wallace " Blue"
This tartan is not often seen. The previous Chief, the late Lt. Col. Malcolm Wallace of that Ilk, said when asked about the Wallace Blue, "it is a very nice tartan, but it's not Wallace". Malcolm only recognized the Red Wallace and under duress, the Green.
Emphasis mine...
The Chief pretty much can acknowledge the "official" tartans, but your reference was to the previous Chief of the Wallace Clan, and since they are showing the various tartans on their page, that means they at least acknowledge them, though the "Blue" and the "Wallace of Dundee" are not commonly thought of as "Official Wallace" Tartans.
Todd probably has better information.

My thoughts were that that was the Previous Chief, and not the current Chief, who did not care for any other than the Red. The current Chief can acknowledge any or all, as He chooses.
Even with that, it does not change the fact that the other Tartans are out there, and may be worn with the same pride and connection.
The "approved" tartans only states what the current Chief's viewpoint is, whereas History may change this. So wear whichever you like!

Wallace Tartans
I'm a member of Clan Wallace, and spoke to the membership coordinator about the very same thing at our last Highland Games in Charleston...coming up again in just over two weeks, by the way...Sept 15.
He said that the current clan DOES recognize Wallace Red, Green (hunting) and blue.
Also, all four tartans (to include Wallace of Dundee) are shown in the Wallace geneaology books.

The chief was probably too stingy to buy himself another kilt.
