Almost in public
Yesterday we went to visit my wifes sister and I was kilted there and also while driving home. I could claim that I was semi-public kilted for first time.
Today, while driving to the job (not kilted), I had a minor car crash (not my fault) and afterwards my thinking was; "That would be a hard way to start wearing a kilt in public "
So, in small steps..... some day.....hopefuly...
Regards!

Up to now, I only noticed a picture in local paper, showing a Scot (living in my neighborhood even) slicing the Haggis, kilted during some sort of Scotland presentation. Otherwise non.
On the other hand, one local radio station, which has very active web page, did show some web camera shots of one of the speaker/reporter putting the kilt on. But he put it completly wrong way and for me it was so disgraceful that I placed (rather polite) comment, but was ignored.
I think this is telling you all.

I understand how that could result in second thoughts. about 10 m onths ago my wife and I were in a major accident, rolled a mini-van at 65 MPH, while coming back from the highland games. I was wearing my Stillwater Heavyweight. No comments until the cabbie taking us home from the hospital said something. And we thought it was because she was wearing a hospital gown since they had cut off her top, broken collar bone. We never even thought about the kilt.

I've had those same thoughts when driving kilted. I usually try to remember to throw a pair of cargo shorts and a t-shirt in the car just in case I have to change a tire or something.
I can just picture the scene if I roll the car and am hanging suspended from the seat belts when they come to get me and the kilt is hanging down over my head. No need to ask the question I guess.

Two winters ago my Car broke down in the middle of the worst storm (ice storm to be exact) to date on the 401 series highway, (the busiest highway in North America by some reckoning) of course, I was kilted. I had to wait at the side of the highway for an hour waiting for a tow truck to arrive, I called my brother to come and get me but the tow truck driver never said a word about the kilt and I only felt the chill in my feet. I thing it may be worth mentioning that I was wearing a 16oz wool kilt and an Argyll Jacket with an overcoat and wool hose.
I hope the accident was a minor one and that you are OK.

It's amazing how warm 8 yards of wool can be. And yet I've worn mine in 90º heat here in Chicago and been comfortable.

Thank you for your concern. Everything is OK, just some paint work to be done.

Let me share a similar story: went to a dance last Monday, in my PV Stewart Grey kilt. After the dance, I discovered that a rear tire was totally flat. It wouldn't get me to a gas station for air. So, decided to change it and put the spare on. I've never done that before but it was successful and I was wearing my kilt doing it. Was happy to do it too because it was in a parking garage that was underground and very hot and humid. Glad yours is just a paint job...

Another small step in being kilted!
Yesterday, while I was kilted at home, the door-bell rang. Wife was teasing me:" Go open the door". So I went and there was one of our neighbours standing in front of me. She didn't noticed my kilt (or at least seemed to me so). We were talking and I asked her how does she like my kilt. She put the smile on here face and replayed: " Really nice! Are you going somewhere?"
So everything was as it should be; normal...
