Here's a pick of mine:


The easiest way to make them, is similar to Christmas Stockings. It will make it easier to actually get your feet in them. Now, I didn't say "Make Christmas Stockings", I said similar. They will be smaller than Christmas stockings.

So they can be knitted, I think that would be diced, as in the above photo using 2 colours, am I right?

These are sewn from woolen fabric. Knitted hosiery during the Jacobite period would've been rare. Highlanders that did wear them had the dosh to afford such a luxury.

These and the photo above illustrate what the majority wore. They can be matching tartan, contrasting tartan, or plain woven wool fabric of that time period. No matter the fabric selection, they are cut on the bias so that they'll stretch over your feet & legs.

The hose themselves are simple to stitch. For greater authenticity, the hand-stitched seam should go outside the hose and up the back leg.

I like the footless version. Easy to make, and great for the normal reenactment environment - wet and muddy! With these, you can wear a succession of dry under-socks as the event proceeds, without having to own a pile of the full-footed version.

As mentioned,the seam runs up the back of the leg....
