Herringbone Vests
What is the general consensus of a wool herringbone weave vest with the kilt? Would the herringbone pattern distract from the tartan or might it pair well for a semi-casual look?

The use of herringbone patterns for jackets and waistcoats with a kilt has a long tradition.

It's going to depend far more on colour than weave. I'd think a grey herringbone tweed would be fine with any tartan at day time events of any level of formality.

I do love a nice brown herringbone tweed with my kilts.
I just picked up this Harris Tweed waistcoat for $40 on Ebay, new with tags.
I want my waistcoats to have all four pockets; I end up having stuff in all of them when running around at a Highland Games or a piping gig.
Here out at a Games a few years ago with a different waistcoat

Of my tweed jackets, two have a herringbone pattern as does an odd waistcoat I have and my inverness cape. In my experience, herringbone pairs with a kilt and certainly does not detract from the kilt.

Tweed Swatches
In my opinion, herringbone jackets and vest go very nicely with kilts. If you have a general color in mind, I have a swatch book from Marton Mills. I can send you photos.

I think Harringbone works well with the kilt. My favourite kilt jacket and waistcoat combo is harringbone from 1931, so I would say it has precedent.

I got a half-dozen swatches of their tweeds and I will say that (at least on my laptop) the colours seen on their website run fairly true.
In comparing several of their tweeds with the four kilts I have (in Modern, Weathered, and Muted colours) I found that the tweed that looked best with all was Marton Mills' CGE147 Plover. It's wonderfully neutral and "tones with" everything.
I'm a Marton Mills fan. Here's my jacket in CGE254 Multicheck and kilt in their tartan tweed Hunting Stewart Weathered.

I wear a herringbone vest a lot in cooler weather with my kilts. I've always liked the look personally.
