Coming Off a Six Month Kilt Binge...The Financial Reality
First of all, I'm an intelligent, aware, 60-year-old, financially secure adult and can afford what happened during my binge.
Not sure why, but sat down this morning to add up the financial aspect of all this fun I've been having since spotting my first Utilikilt at the Arizona Rennaisance Faire last Spring.
Took me a few months to get around to ordering my first kilt from UK, then had to wait 11 weeks for it. So I medicated the jones by ordering more kilts from other houses. Then came the "accessories." Then came the desert summer options, pareos and a river skirt.
Those of you new to the board, just thought this would warn you of how easily an intelligent aware adult can turn into a gutter kiltoholic.
UtiliKilts - 6 kilts $1523
Pittsburgh Kilts - 3 kilts $530
Freedom Kilts - 2 kilts $472
Kathy's Kilts - 1 kilt $410
AmeriKilts - 4 kilts $395
SportKilts - 2 kilts $159
Total: 18 kilts -$3,489 :o
Then there are the "accessories," kilt hose, flashes, sporrans, sporan straps, wide belts, boots, sweaters, sashes, hats, kilt logo t-shirts, and kilt books.
An easy $1500 more.
I figure this binge ran $5,000 easy. :o
But I am happy, I am free, I can afford it. And damn it, I still have a long wish list
And, the kilt addiction has had me experimenting in other areas. Spent $226 on pareos from Pareo Island and Afa Tasi then a riverskirt from Macabi.
Don't know that I'd have done anything different. I'm loving it. I see the cost as a sound investment in clothing and accessories of value.
Point of the post is how fast all this can happen once hooked...and perhaps a warning of the power of this addiction to young men saving up for their first kilt...

speaking true words riverkilt ;)
since i ve been hooked life really changed. couldīnt had ever guessed that i ll become a kiltoholic.
at least it s astonishing to me that i pay such money for clothing, would have been unbelievable if somebody has said two years before that i would spend
thousand of euros... but the kilt is not just clothe, it s a philosphy ;)
for me it s an investment in feeling me in a totally different way

I've easily spent $3500.00 on kilt related stuff. Only I've done it over a period of about 4 years so it doesn't hurt as bad. And I've made sure I've never gone over my head in the process. It may be considered a bit of an indulgence by some, but you know what?... Ya can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy it while you can!

Ron,
It sounds to me that you have made wise investments, in such a short amount of time. Well done!

hmmmm, if I keep going at the rate I have been I'll hit between 5 and 6 thousand this year!
My first kilt was bought at the end of September as a birthday present for myself, it's not even mid-December and I'm already approaching the $1500 mark. 5 kilts, one kilted skirt for the wife and various other 'things' like hose, sporrans, belts and such. Whew, you really don't notice it building up that quickly.
He he he, and you should see my Christmas wish list
Luckly I too am a little older and have the money to spend, I think wisely in this case.

Ron, you make me very envious and I'm sure I'd be down the same road if I had the finances. I have one excellent tartan wool kilt and one excellent Utilikilt in my wardrobe (when not on my waist!). I have several other 'cheaper' kilts purchased to expand the wardrobe but sadly they do not meet my standards - in retrospect I could have bought another good kilt with the money I've wasted on these. A lesson to be learned there!

And who would you reccomend Jeff?????
Would you believe my annual pay raise came through, five months late, so they gave me a "make up" check...gonna be REAL hard to apply that to first aid for my plastic rathern than another kilt...real real hard....
