Variation on "Are you Scottish?"
WARNING . . . WARNING . . . not responsible for damage to computers!!
Many of us have gotten asked, "are you Scottish?" . . .
This past week I was at a work-related conference, kilted most of the week. As with many conferences, this one was held in a large hotel, with meals served in one of the large exhibit areas. When you walked in to the meal area, the wait staff was directing people to available tables.
As I walked in to lunch one day (kilted), one of the men directing traffic asked me, "are you from New Jersey?" . . . as I was leaving, he asked, "are you SURE you're not from New Jersey?"
What I found even funnier was that I used the kilt as a visual analogy in a presentation that I gave, as an example of interpretation of an item changing with the context, for example "kilt" in Scotland would give the listener an image of a traditional tartan kilt in various forms, but kilt in Seattle could easily give the listener an image of someone in a Utilikilt (with appropriate pictures) . . .
I can't for the life of me figure out his context . . . ;)
Regards,
Mark
p.s. several of my buddies mentioned that they'd seen someone besides me in a kilt during the week . . . any XMarkers at the DB2 Tech Conference last week?

My kilted son & I are as perplexed as you are, Mark.
Weird, but funny.

WOW Mark, I am at a loss for words, that does seem perplexing. I really didn't think kilts were big in New Jersey.

Maybe he wasn't talking about the kilt... maybe you look like someone he knows from New Jersey or something...

One day last week I had an equally strange question. Here's the set up -- I was at work, at the SCOTTISH Tartans Museum. I'm standing behind the front counter, in a KILT. A gentleman walks in with his wife. His wife pays to go see the museum, but for one reason or another, he doesn't want to go through. So he sits himself down on the bench in front of the counter, and proceeds to make small talk.
He says, with all sincerity, "Are you 100% Dutch?"
Taken aback by the seeming randsomness of this question, I answer honestly. "No, no I'm not Dutch at all. I'm Scottish and English with a little bit of Irish."
And he proceeds to tell me about some buddy of his that is part Irish, and the question of Scottish heritage, or why on earth he thought I might be Dutch, never comes back up.
Aye,
Matt
