X-Marks tartan meaning?
I'm sure its been covered, but having only been around 6 months or so I haven't heard the story. What is the significance behind the colors and design of the X-Marks the Scott Tartan and who designed it? I think its a great tartan, I just don't know the story behind it.

I designed it and I based it on the colors of the forum itself. Pretty simple, really. :-)

But why blue, white, and gold? You can design a website and tartan in any colors.

The blue and white for for the saltire (Xmarks the Scot), but I don't know where the gold came in. Sure looks nice though
Matt you did a great job.

I thought it was for the colors of our zeppelin and our clan badge?

I heartily agree that Matt designed a beautiful tartan.

Thanks Matt,
What a great color tweak Gordon made. For me, the dark blue is the core color.
Was struck by the fact that the tartan evolved from cooperation and contributions between Hank, Matt, Steve, and Gordon.
Two Americans and Two Canadians...okay one ex-pat....but even that makes it such a "friendship blend" of a tartan - International at its birth then spreading World wide.
Blues for the oceans that touch our shores, gray for the cloudy skys of Scotland, yellow for the gold it takes to buy kilts and accessories, white for the stunned look on people's faces when they see kilts worn outside a pipe band or whisky bottle label.

The gold comes from the 'golden words pf wisdom' that issue forth from the rabble on this Forum.....

Doing a little searching I found a couple of very early threads where there was speculation about an "X Marks the Scot" tartan. This seems to be the one where the Nor Cal Rabble's Alan H. got the ball rolling:

It is true that Matt designed a beautiful Tartan for us however, I was the one who did the color selection from yarns sent to me from the weaver.
Blue for the background of the Saltire Flag
White for the Cross on the flag
The gray was chosen to represent the typing we enter and read on these pages.
And the yellow ------ What else? It's for the smiley faces!
