As I have been so enjoying X-Marks and learning so much while my own collection is growing, my preferences and wish list for what I now like in a kilt have changed. Initially, I thought the hip hugger style would be best, but in the wearing and in looking at so many others wearing kilts both at the games and in the many photos on the web, I now have begin to think that the hip huggers are great for the lean folks, but somewhat lacking when worn beneath anything approaching middle age spread or all too sufficient rear end. In terms of looks and comfort, the higher waisted style, measured at the belly button, seems far more comfortable, drapes more smoothly, and stays even at the bottom.

These thoughts then led to my own reflections upon what I personally would love in a “perfect” kilt. Here, I’m thinking more of comfort, ease of wear and convenience than such issues as tartan preference or the style of pleating. For example, I would love a kilt that could be essentially “thrown on” with minimal reaching, adjusting and fastening, something that is so easy to put on that it only takes seconds., but still looks finished. Too, I’m thinking in terms of a full length, simple, stylish kilt that could be worn daily and with any belt, shirt or sweater.

All of this would seem to take me to a fairly simple wrap with wide front and back panels, but that takes me to the consideration of pockets, in lieu of a sporran. Definitely one cargo style back pocket, but what of the front/side pockets. Some now have the slit style, while others the cargo style in front of the hips. It would seem that the slit pockets would result in bulky lumps that ruin the line of the drape.

This all takes me back to a simple wrap style kilt with a waistband and belt loops, wide under and top panels that run from hip to hip, front and back cargo pockets. This would seem like it would be attractive in a wide range of fabrics from tartans to tweeds as well as solid colors of many materials, but with no straps or buckles, essentially a very well made though simple kilt of fine materials.
