    Sporran question...

A couple of questions for the rabble:

I have 2 kilts (Utilikilt and Rkilt). These are both beautiful kilts, but I was looking to get a tartan kilt. My other 2 kilts are more modern and do not require sporrans because they already have pleanty of pocket space.

    So finally the question...

    1. What is the difference between a "Rob Roy" sporran and and "regular" sporran? (I have read these terms on the threads and just want to make sure what they mean...)

    2. I have never seen te back side of a sporran, so...do all of them have a belt loop? What kind of fasteners attach the sporran to the sporran belt?

    3. What do you call this kind of sporran hanger?

1} Rob Roy sporrans are usually made from a lighter or softer leather approx. 2-3oz/sq.ft. a regular or day sporran uses stiffer or heavier leather 8-10oz/sq.ft and retain a shape. The Rob Roy style tends to be roomier and easier to get your hand in to acquire your belongings.
    2) The better quality sporrans have a loop made from the heavier leather, this allows a sporran belt to go through or it will have a small strap with a dee ring on each end to have a sporran chain strap to clip onto.
    3) a sporran hanger. It is designed to be used with a kilt belt, as well as allow a sporran to be worn comfortably for those of us that are of a generous size so to speak.
    Cheers
    Robert

    1. A Rob Roy sporran is really just a styling of sporran. I'm sure someone can provide a picture. That style does tend to have a soft body, which allows it to hold a bit more than the stiff bodied sporrans.

    2. I have seen sporrans with different ways to attach them to the sporran belt. Some have the belt loop; some have only the d-rings to attach snaps; and some have both.

    3. I have only ever heard these called a sporran hanger or sporran loops. The are used to hang the sporran directly from the kilt belt instead of using a sporran strap.

This is a Rob Roy sporran I'm wearing here, this one was made by Freelander Sporrans and carries quite a bit more than a "regular" sporran

This would be I think a more "regular" sporran

Sporran buying can be difficult since "most" sporran sellers don't think we need to know the dimensions of the product they offer. Be sure you can get your hand in the top. There are MANY quality sporran makers out there IF you are careful upfront. If you're going for low price and efficiancy I'm oversold on the design of the Stillwater Kilts Nightstalker Sporran. Comes in ballistic nylon or leather. Key to the success is the way its organized with top zipper and front wallet pocket...makes it "easy to drive."

RKilts makes a well organized sporran too. If you wanna have some fun designing your own traditional sporran play with the L&M Highland build a sporran feature. Or if you just wanna go nutso in sporran land search this board for "sporran."

Or....some of us wear a vest or bomber jacket in lieu of a sporran...shows more tartan.

    Enjoy your kilt accessorie addiction...

Thank you guys for all of the info...

I did a little search and found this leather maker. The sporrans are a bit on the expensive side, but they look beautiful. Has anyone ever dealt with this leather maker?

Robert (or anyone that owns one), does the Rkilt "Tasmanian" sporran have a strap on the back so it could be hung from a sporran hanger like the one pictured above?

Dean, if you do a search for wyvern you will find some reviews of Donnie's sporrans. Donnie is a member here.

Like all the authorized vendors here, Donnie of Wyvern is a great guy to deal with.

I have one of his sporrans and commissioned a custom purse for my wife. Both transactions were great.

I can also highly recommend Turpin of Thorfinn Sporrans (another sponsor merchant) and have 2 of his sporrans.

And you're already seen Robert's (R-Kilts) sporrans, another great product from another great guy.

    Good luck choosing!

I just purchased a sporran from Donnie (Wyvern Leatherworks). Got a mahogany sporran with a Celtic cross design and matching sporran belt. The sporran is beautiful and Donnie is great to deal with.
