    Tartan ID please??

    Hello all!
I have a favour to ask... I just found a wool blend on the clearance table at Hancock Fabrics that looks similar to the Morag tartan but not exactly... I bought it as a test run for a DIY traditional kilt but I was hoping I could name the tartan (that is IF it's even a REAL tartan). The first picture is the Morag and the second is my "tartan"... Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you very much!!

All I'm seeing is a red X where the 2nd pic should be.

Don't think it is Morag----not black stripes anywhere and there is a tan stripe in the middle of what should be solid blue in the Morag.

This is a job for "Super-Matt"! Faster than a speeding needle and thread, more stronger than a rapier double weaving machine, shinier than brand new Lochcarron 16 oz tartan. It's "Super-Matt"! Sorry , he must be having trouble finding a phone booth, what with cell phones all the rage you know. But I am sure he will be along shortly.

I agree with Matt. It also looks like a tabby weave. Tartans are usually a twill weave, the thread carries over two threads. A tabby weave carries over only one thread.

a bit of clarification here. Yes, Kilt tartan is usually a twill weave, but I have seen some old ones (pre 1775) which were tabby weave. Also the lighter weight tartan used for sashes and neck ties is often (but not always) a tabby weave.

Soooo...... fashion tartan....... as in "I'll make fun of you if you make a kilt out of it" or more of a "name your own and have fun with your first run DIY kilt" thing??? My social integrity is on the line here!! lol

    Thanks for your help all!

I'm no expert but the naming of a tartan is not arbitrary and not really up to the wearer. It's either a tartan - in which case it's registered and named- Or it's a "fashion plaid" and not a tartan. In either case, in my humble opinion, it's not really to be named. If you would like a tartan there are hundreds to choose from.
