Packing up for the trip...
With the help of my loving wife I concluded my first iteration of packing for the trip. I fly Tuesday out of Denver. I have my kilt and other stuff packed and a bunch of casual stuff - pair of shorts and jeans etc. I plan on buying a bunch of attire while there and mailing back what I can't pack and carry. I checked the weather in Edinburgh today and it's calling for high 50's on the 22d and a mixed bag after that. Aside from plenty of travelers checks in pounds and a couple of credit cards I can't think of anything I'll need that I can't buy.
I'd like to do some shopping for some good prices on Jackets and maybe a PC outfit X-rental. Anyone have experience at that or am I just whistling up a tree to find anything reasonable in Edinburgh or Glasgow during the high season.

Good luck on your trip to Scotland. I am going to be packing for my trip with the family also. Three Kilts, one on and two in the bag, swim trunks, golf clubs and a toothbrush for the family vacation in Hawaii.

I'll be looking for a nice evening sporran, myself. I think we can't forget about good buys but you never know. At least we can hold our item in our hands before purchasing it. Safe travels. See you in Edinburgh!

If you haven't bought the travellers cheques yet then don't bother. They are not widely accepted nowadays other than in banks, and shops, pubs etc. mostly don't take them apart from a few out and out tourist places. If you can get one of those pre-loaded cards you can use in ATM's - they are everywhere here - and make sure your credit card company knows you'll be using it abroad before you go.
Shorts might be a little optimistic unless your legs really do look good covered in goose-bumps. Jeans and light casual pants might be a better option. A necessity is a light waterproof jacket/cagoule - it sometimes rains here. You will probably be doing a lot of walking so comfortable shoes are a must.
The real high season in Edinburgh doesn't start until the festival begins at the end of the month so you might still grab a good buy. I recommend you take yourself to Armstrong's in the Grassmarket for good prices on jackets, kilts etc. then back up to the Royal Mile and head downhill to pass Edinburgh Woolen Mill, Hector Russell, Celtic Craft centre, Geoffrey Tailor, and further down Nicholsons which I always find are less of a rip-off than the others. Don't buy until you have done them all then work your way back up. All the others you will see are "tartan tat" shops of various kinds and, contrary to the impression given are not particularly cheap for shoddy stuff. I forgot to mention Geoffrey Tailor's other place up the road nearly at the castle.

I'd leave out the shorts jeans and casual trousers. You can always buy a cheap Gold Brothers kilt in Edinburgh for casual wear, which gives you the option of hose up or hose down depending on whether the sun shines.

WOW! great advise all. My bank card is a debit so I can put the cash back in ans use it. I shall re think the shorts and jeans, but wonder about the practice of wearing a daily kilt,
Also, I have assembled a nice Ike Jacket.shirt/tie to wear on teh evening I attend the tattoo. Since it is a dedicated miitary event and I have 26 years of active service I believe the ensambls is entirly apppropriaste. Agree/disagree?

Your outfit will be fine for the Tattoo. It can, even at this time of year, get a wee tad cold in the evenings and of course, prepare to get wet!Have fun!
