    Another hose color question. 80)

I found an old thread from someone inquiring about Royal Stewart & black hose.

Hamish said this was a no-go. He also mentioned mentioned no white. I assume this includes cream?

I am going to my brothers informal outdoor wedding in June and will wear my Royal Stewart, and possibly my 8-hole Docs (as seen in my avatar) and am wondering about hose. I suspect I will wear a white dress shirt and red wool tie.

What color hose do you recommend?
Should I find myself a pair of regular doc shoes?
Can I wear a short sleeve white dress shirt with a tie? (The Sipowtiz)

    Thanks!!!

Given that you're talking about wearing Docs with it, I'm assuming you aren't trying to go for "traditional". So before we get a bunch of replies telling you that you should do this or that, maybe you could elaborate on what level of opinion you're looking for. Are you interested in trying to look traditional in your kilt for this wedding?

Personally, I would go with normal dress shoes and non-white hose (and yes, cream is generally considered white for these purposes). For matching Royal Stewart, maybe a nice shade of blue would go well for the hose. Wearing Doc Marten boots with this outfit, and for this occasion, would be a bit odd.

I'm not a fan of the Sipowitz look. Especially at a wedding. Some guys can pull it off at a less dressy event like a Highland Games, when wearing more 'outdoorsy' shirts. But for a wedding, if it's informal, I'd still go with a long-sleeved shirt and tie, but roll the sleeves up to the elbow if you don't want to look too dressy.

Thanks, you confirmed what I was thinking about the Docs. I don't need to be too traditional, but don't want to be too informal either. Good excuse to get some black dress shoes.

I'm not sure I can pull off the Sipowitz either, but I am a fan of rolled sleeves. I think my red tie, and a rolled sleeve white shirt would go nicely.

I'll take a trip to my local shop to look at blue hose, I think Oatmeal was also offered as a suggestion. What about a shade of green?

I think we need an iPhone or web app that allows you to choose your kilt, hose, shoes, shirt, tie to see what colour combinations would work!

Green would work too. Perhaps a lovat, or even a 'tartan green' colour would look smart with your kilt.

Or, you could simply lay out different outfits that you own and decide from there!

    Cheers,

Black hose seem to be almost as troublesome as white to many folks, I guess because we're taught that they are both an absence of color. And indeed I don't wear black ones myself, but I do wear really dark charcoal sometimes. I'd think with Royal Stewart I'd look at some greens or blues though.
Have to agree with everyone on the Sipowitz, or 'mission control' as we call it in Houston. But you state it's an 'informal' event, and at least in my lexicon 'informal' and 'tie' don't go together, so just wear the s/s shirt without a tie. Better yet, once you settle on some hose you like, find a shirt that matches/coordinates with them, that can be a smart informal look.

Heh, mission control is always what I think of too. It's almost a rule that if you wear a short-sleeved shirt with a tie, you have to wear a pocket protector and thick-rimmed glasses.

It also reminds me of Michael Douglas in the movie Falling Down.
