Kilt length measurement
Hello everyone! I just placed my first kilt order yesterday. My wife did all of the measuring.... I thought we had everything right. Then I got an email today saying that since I stand 6'2" and have a 34 inch inseam, the kilt length seemed a bit too short at 23.5" This is supposed to be the measurement from my navel to my knee, right? I also kneeled on the floor and measured from my navel to the floor.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi Dunlop!
It all depends on who you ordered from. They all have different ways of measuring the same kilt, usually shown on their website. Who's making it?

Well then, here's your measuring guide: http://www.atlantakilts.com/guides/measuring/ Using anyone else's including your own will guarantee problems.

Thanks! That's what I did. I followed their guide to a T. Maybe my body is just a bit odd. I'll try the towel technique and see how it goes

Well, an "odd" body sounds familiar to me! Well done.

My son-in-law had a very odd length measurement that was questioned. Kilt arrived and it fits him well. It seems he's just built that way - short hip bone or whatever. However, maybe you have a low navel in relation to the bottom of your ribcage, especially if you are long-bodied. Wrap a towel about you as if it was a kilt (folded to your 23.5"). Does it look right? Is it comfortably situated on natural waist - which is noted as about belly button but also associated with just under rib cage.

Looks as though you have done a little homework. I (at 6 foot tall) have a long waist and thighs. I require a 22.5 length that fits above my knees. I like my kilt high and snug against my ribs, but when my kilt slips down, I find the kilt hem does not fall below my knees. With my kilt settled on my body, the length is perfect for me. I hope you find this with your kilt.

Looks good to me also. Your kilt will slip at times and seem too long over the knees, but I expect you won't feel it an issue that a minor adjustment can fix.

With my old and traditional eye your towel test looks all wrong. Too low at the knee and not high enough at the top. OK I know camera angles can give a false look, but I cannot even see the bottom part of the knee! All the knee cap should be visable for the traditional look and most of it should be visible for the more modern look. I note that you say that you measured from the belly button to the knee. Yes I quite understand that every kilt maker has his own method of measuring but--------which part of the knee? I am no kilt maker and it also depends what you as the customer wants, but most go for the more traditional height of top of the knee cap or just a wee tad above. How about trying the top of the kneecap look and if you like it, take your measurements from there? Then you can worry about where you want the top part! Above the BB( yes BB's are not necessarily in the same place for everyone) is perfectly sound too if that is what you like. I would check again with your kilt maker on the measurements he requires, but should the towel test turn out the same again I would find another kilt maker.
