    Our own tartan

I was wandering throught a local supermarket today and out of the blue come this mad idea. Why don't X Marks get there own tartan woven and kilts madeup from it. If 50 of us can buy a kilt pin surely we could buy a measure of tartan each. I know the idea if fraught with problems, Like cost, what colours etc but with time we could do it. With the wealth of kilt makers in X marks we have the experts to guide us. Any supporters for the idea

I would seriously consider purchasing one, if I like it (and of course the kilted life in general, I have a while to wait yet)

I like this idea. Possible? Yes! Probable? I don't think so! I give the XMarks kilt pin as evidence. It was talked about many times and finally Hank was able to find someone to produce the pins. Now, the rub! We could not get 50 members to purchase a 25USD pin. Did you get your 35, Hank?

The cost of tartan, and having it made into a kilt would be far more expensive, not to mention, the tartan design.

Now, having said all that, is there a kiltmaker out there that views this as a worthwhile project and would like to take an "assertive" lead? Casual? Traditional? Eh?

Having tartan custom made is one thing, and having the tartan made into a kilt is another....

Perhaps the best way to go about it, if I may, is to have, say, Daneel (the originator of this idea!!)look into how much custom weave costs? I think some mills, e.g. Fraser and Kirkbright, will do a run for as little as 30 yards, but I don't know what they would need or how much it would cost...

As far as having a kilt made from the fabric, that should be up to the individual buying the fabric. You buy what fabric you would need, and find a kiltmaker to put it together....

    Just my $0.02......

I got just 35 kiltpins ordered. I have to agree that this would be quite a project, but hey if someone wants to take the bull by the horns, have at it!

As neat as it sounds, I think it's probably too expensive for most of us. I know there's no way I could afford it.

I think I remember seeing a price of $1100 for a custom run at one of the Scottish mills, but I don't know if I am remembering correctly....

And yes, it would be a chunk of change, to be sure.....

I couldn't get in on a buy either.....

Getting the funds together would be easier than you actually think. Don't worry about making it into a kilt yet though... that's putting the cart infront of the horse.

There are domestic sources to get the tartan made... just ask Barb. 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 yard orders can add-up pretty quickly on a nice tartan.

The MOST DIFFICULT part is going to be a tartan design that will be appealing to a large number of guys. Straight blue and white will look like a dish towel. What are the colors that are appealing to a consensus? Once decided upon, it has to be a design that's not already in existance... and there are thousands.

The thought is OUTSTANDING. I think the site is worthy of such an honor too. I, personally, would like to see Pittsburgh Kilts or Freedom Kilts come-up with a soft, blue kilt with a back pocket flap that has a saltire on it. An XMarksTheScot kilt pin on the front flap would be a nice touch.

I would wear that all the time.
