A sporran on the side...
I was thinking about sporrans today, and how they're simply pockets for kilts that have none. Now, we have non-traditional kilts, but what about non-traditional sporrans?
I thought, "What about wearing a sporran more to the side than just straight in front?" Then wondered about the possibility of a 'double sporran' - perhaps a main sporran in front and then higher up on the belt/strap to one side a smaller sporran or pouch?
There's really no limit to the possibilities, na dif one wanted to wear a traditional kilt, you could still maintain a traditional style to the design whilst changing the basic layout.
Perhaps like a utility-belt or carrier-belt. Increased day-to-day options for the modern day-to-day kilt wearer.

It is quite accepted to wear a sporran on the side when engaged in activity such as walking, running or drumming in a pipe band.
some of the non traditional kilts such as Utilikilts already come with pockets of sorts.
I think a sporran is a superior alternative to pockets in trousers.

On a windy day you will be grateful to have the sporran between your legs.....as I became aware once again last stormy Satu rday....

Side sporrans are sold I think by 'Scotweb' and are a sensible alternative to the conventional sporran-more so when laden with wallet-keys-cash etc.
Whilst if a sporran is worn conventionaly if low enough to offer any wind protection it is too low for comfort and safety, too it will impede walking.
I've worn a side sporran for day to day wear for some years now, and it has never attracted comment: whilst also being much more convenient.
By the way the Hill Walker and the Gentlemen's kilts have provided pockets for many years now: so there is nothing new in having a kilt with a pocket/s.

Galant, I do like your idea of two sporrans, it does make sense.

I saw a fellow wear two sporrans at the highland games last summer. He had the a Buzz Kidder, Rob Roy, on his belt, and a different type worn in the traditional fashion.

I may be wrong (in which case I am sure someone with more info will correct me), but I believe that sporrans were traditionally worn to the side. Now I am not talking about the formal outfits, but rather the Highland Scots that wore their kilts on a day to day basis. I hate refering to a film for a reference, but in Rob Roy you can see that they all wear their sporrans to the side. Check out a Freelander sporran http://home.c2i.net/kilted_1/public_html/ , as it may be perfect for this and for dressier use.
As for using 2 sporrans, I have only done this once or twice. I have used a day sporran around my waist, and have used my clan tartan sporran from Bear Kilts http://www.bearkilts.com/sporranpg2.html over my shoulder and under arm (under a jacket of course) as the sporran and strap are soft enought the fit withou being bulky and cumbersome. A passport case or neck money belt can also be used this way.
