Looking for tartan

Can anyone of you clever lads and lassies tell me where I can get a kilt made in this tartan, the St.Columba tartan.
I first saw it on Iona last july and love the way it identifies with the island, Columba himself and the colours are nice too.

That is a fine looking tartan Graham, can see why you'd wanna kilt from it.

That tartan is a proprietary tartan, and can only be purchased from Celtic Originals on the Isle of Mull.

The tartan was designed by Peter MacDonald for them, and proceeds go to support charities.

I don't know if they produce kilts themselves or not. Clicking on the product info links on their web site this morning just got me a bunch of "404 Page Not Found" messages. Not sure if it is my problem or theirs. At any rate, their phone number is there.

If they don't make kilts themselves, then the next thing would be to see if they make kilt weight cloth, and then either purchase the cloth to send to your favorite kilt maker, or have whatever kilt maker you want to work with order the cloth directly.

I don't know what weights and prices are available, you'd have to give them a call.

I agree, it's a nice tartan. I bought a scarf in it when I was on Iona five years ago, and it now makes quite a nice wall hanging in my bedroom!

Cool, it looks like this is a more up to date site for the same company (though they still have a message up saying not to place an order between Dec. 2004 and March 2005).

According to the site, at least, they can make your kilt for you, and also provide the cloth. (Looks like they have the same basic tartan stock list as Lochcarron, plus their own proprietary tartans).

Looks like their kilts are 310.00 pounds, and their cloth by the yard is 39.95, though either they don't say what weight cloth it is, or I am just missing it.

missed this post, thanks for the info, David, I checked the site, 310 pounds for a kilt?? wow, that's $750 AUD, which is really very expensive.

A four yard kilt might be within reach if I could buy the cloth.

Well, I phoned the Iona Abbey shop where I first saw the tartan.
The lady who arranges the tartan is unwell and has given up the business.

Nice looking tartan! I also like the Jones at the top. Question for whoever knows, the description for the Jones says for any person, or place, bearing the name Jones. Would that preclude me, not being of Jones descent that I know and not living in a place called Jones (although I am always jonesing for new kilts!) wearing that tartan? I think it is very nice and fits with my style and color preferences, but I would not want to offend anybody if I wore it.

Hi folks

All of Celtic Originals' tartans were woven by D.C. Dalgliesh and they are Dalgliesh's standard 11-12 oz weight. It is beautiful tartan, and it's the fabric in the Antarctica and Arctic kilts that I made (pics posted in a previous thread). Makes a very nice light medium weight kilt. Selvedge is not kilting, but a hem looks fine and adds some weight for swing.

I hadn't heard that Ros Jones was ill and had given up the business. You might try calling Angie at D.C. Dalgliesh and see if she knows where the tartan can be obtained. Dalgliesh doesn't have an e-mail address (unless they've gotten one very recently and I haven't heard about it). Dalgliesh's phone is 011-44-1-750-20781
