The first kilt
Hi all,
I started reading this board a couple of days ago, because I all over sudden felt the desire to buy and wear a kilt. Now it is not as easy as it seems. Therefore this will be my first kilt ever. I don't want to invest too much money just to find out that I don't like it.
On the other hand; a bad/cheap kilt might just create displeasure.
I saw relatively cheap kilts at SWK. Would one of their economy or standard kilts be a good point to start?
Best regards,
Johannes

Welcome to the forum, Johannes.
SWK economy kilts are not worth buying except as a halloween costume, but their standard and/or heavyweight kilts are supposed to be much better. I've heard nothing but good reviews of them.

Hello, and welcome to the boards!
I own two SWK's, a standard an an [acrylic] heavyweight.
The standard is a black stewart. It's a great kilt to start with. The pleating is roughly to the sett, and you really get the feel for what wearing a kilt is like.
The Heavyweight is - of course- a little heavier. It also has the pleats sewn down the fell. Those are the two big differences between the two really. Of course, the new heavyweights are wool, rather than acrylic.
I don't own an economy, and the advice on these boards has always been that they were crap, and only useful to - someone correct me if I'm wrong - serve as curtains in a vw bus.
I'd at least step up for the standard version, if not the heavyweight.
Hope you enjoy kilting

First off, welcome. The Stillwater standerds are a good start if your on a budget. For cooler weather go with the Heavyweights.Stillwaters come in only one length so you may have to hem it up,which isn't all that hard. Before you commit yourself to one brand, check with the other kiltmakers that advertise here at X-Marks.They may be out of your price range, but you'll have an idea of whats availible.

Welcome Johannes,
You don't say where you are in the world. If by chance there's a kilt rental shop near you that would probably be the least expensive way to experiement.
Two other inexpensive options;
The Utilikilt Original. That way you save the expense of a sporran.
The SportKilt line, but only if you go all the way with sewn down pleats, belt loops, and custom length.
