STILL No Michigan Tartan?!?!?
Well it's official!
With Wisconsin's adoption of a tartan Michigan is now surrounded by states (and a province) with their own official tartans and Michigan still has none!!! Minnesota, Indiana, Ontario, OHIO!!! and now Wisconsin. The 'Michigan Up North' tartan is not official.
!!!!Come on MichiKilters!!!!
This season's Highland Games (Alma, Saline, Kalamazoo, Rockford, Detroit and the various Irish fests) would be great places to get petitions signed!
Any of you belong to Detroit's St Andrew's Society? Gotta get those guys behind you. And I believe there's a Southwest Michigan Scottish Society as well.
Have a design contest but do SOMETHING!
P.S.- As Kurmudgeon, my direct involvement tends to hurt more than it helps. So I hope some of you good-with-people types will get right on this! But I'd be happy to sign anything you come up with.

A contest is a good idea.
Make sure it has alot of dark blue (great lakes) some white (winter wonderland) and, of course, green and/or red (color tour).
Also, for those who care, there was a time, even as late as the last century, when a squirrel could run from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan without once touching the ground. Talk about a huge oak forest!
I'm a native Michigander, and proud!

state tartans...
I have talked to several people who have been involved in the design of state tartans (Louisiana, Iowa, Arkansas and Minnesota specifically), and it is a lot of work -- not to mention diplomacy and politics if official recognition by the state legislature is eventually desired.
If there is already a "fashion" tartan for Michigan, perhaps a vote could be taken among the various Scottish organisations and at the games and then that design could be submitted to the legislature (you'll need some support politically there) for the "official" Michigan tartan.
This web site about the Iowa tartan gives a nice breakdown of the process, INMHO:

But don't just set around complaining and waiting -- get involved with your local Scottish society, and get the ball rolling! ;)
Yours aye,
Todd

The problem for me, of course, is that I live in Ohio now. Ugh.
But I still think it should be done and done right.

The way things are going in Michigan there might not be a need for a tartan. "Will the last one to leave please turn out the lights" is phrase I've heard before and fits well at this time.
A tartan might be nice though, maybe something along the lines of the plaid from the old logging days.
