kiltrental.com? other options?
My first post:
I might graduate this May with a BSc from a college where formal day attire is required at the convocation ceremony, and formal evening attire at the graduation ball. I would like to buy a full package - kilt, jacket, etc, but because I don't know whether this event will happen, and because I am broke, I am thinking that renting would be the way to go.
I would like to wear a Stewart tartan other than the Royal or Dress. Most of the rental agencies I have looked at have Royal Stewart and some other non-Stewart tartans. www.kiltrental.com has Hunting Stewart, which is not my first choice, but would be acceptable.
So, does anybody have any experience with kiltrental.com? I have done a site search that that didn't turn up anything, and google, epinions and ask.com all turned up nothing.
How about other rental companies in the US or Canada that have non-Royal, non-Dress Stewart tartans? I couldn't find any others.

In one word I can describe kiltrental and Colleen (the owner).
FABULOUS!!!
They supplied the kilts, jackets, and accessories for my wedding. They came exactly when she said they would, and she even agreed to overnight anything that might need to be replaced. Colleen is one of the nicest people I have ever met, and was very accomodating. I actually met with her at her home (she lives in Colorado Springs) and she showed me the various tartans available.
Little hints....I rented my shoes and shirt through a local tux shop. They charged remarkably little since that was all I needed. The price for her socks is high, as they are good quality. I still wear mine today (got married August 2004) You can get very good socks (although maybe not as formal) through another dealer, for less.
Colleen will help you all the way. Let her know what you would like, as she is constantly replacing kilts, and may get the one you want.

Does she sell off the excess ones or the ones that have seen better days - might be a good way for a newby to get a starter kilt..... (or an oldie who's sewing machine needs a break to get one as well )
ITS A KILT, G** D*** IT!

I will also suggest Dunedin Scottish as another option. I was in there a few weeks ago and they were very friendly and helpful. The owner was helping somebody on the phone to get the kilt worn at the proper height and insuring it was the correct fit. I don't know what variations of the Stewart they might have, but their site has most everything. They also had a lot of stuff in stock.

Thanks for the link to Dunedin Scottish, KiltedCodeWarrier. According to the site, they rent Black Watch, Gordon Modern, Holyrood, MacKenzie Ancient and National Millennium.

If you are in Vancouver and just want to rent, why not just check out Tartantown on North Road. http://www.tartantown.com/rentals.htm
Their rentals are $169 for 1-3 days and include:
Scottish National, Royal Stewart or Monarch of the Glen kilt
Prince Charlie Jacket & Vest,
Sporran with Sporran Chain,
Garter Flashes, Bow Tie, and
Ghillie Brogue Shoes.
You will have to spend the $20 and get a pair of kilt hose though.
As another option, check out House of MacLaren in Gastown. http://www.geocities.com/houseofmcla...g/rentals.html
Or try http://www.burnetts-struth.com/index.asp or http://www.hector-russell.ca/ both in Ontario.

Except they only rent Irish National, Dress Gordon, Black Watch, and Royal Stewart. But good news for others who aren't as picky as me about tartan.
By the way, I went to a Canadian Orthodox wedding last year. Very interesting from my perspective as a modern Mennonite. I quite enjoyed it, although my arthritic wife wished she could have sat. Tiny church building, big wedding.
