How big of a sin is it?

I will be ordering my first kilt real soon, in fact it will probably be today. I have gathered from reading posts here that one should be careful to match the color of ones shoes with the color of ones sporran and Belt. My question is, how agrevious an act is it to wear shoes of another color?
I'm thinking of ordering a SW nightstalker, and a black sporran and belt. The problem is, the only shoes I have that would be appropriate to wear with a kilt are brown. It also helps that these are my most comfortable shoes too. Most likely I will be wearing my kilt with a sweater or some othe type of garment that will hang a bit covering the belt, so only the sporran will be showing. Or, should I choose another tartan, perhaps the hunting McLeod, which will wear better with brown accessories?
Anyways, please advise if the sight of such a thing would cause one to vomit instantly.

I'm sure I'd be able to keep my lunch down, but the mis-match would be pretty glaring. Go to Payless Shoe Store and spend $20 on some black shoes.

That's exactly what I did - got a pair of their SafeT Step work oxfords - actually very nice leather shoes for the money!

This is the Kilted Koppers. We have you surrounded. Step away from the tartan, and keep your hands where we can see them.

Basic rule of thumb IMHO is that all leathers should match. Is it a crime if it doesn't - no but it just looks better if they do. Will anyone call you out for it - probably not but....

If it were an ultra formal affair then matching would be a MUST but in regular everyday life do what you like & be happy with it.

It's the truth. I have two kilts, with no plans to buy more, but I'm ALWAYS seeing accessories I want.

Step 4. Buy sporrans.
Step 5. Buy kilt pins.
Step 6. Buy fly plaids.
Step 7. Buy jackets.
Step 8. Buy sgian dubhs.
Step 9. Buy shoes.
Step 10. Learn to make kilts.
Step 11. Hang out on X-Marks.
Step 12. Repeat as necessary and have a good time with friends and family.

If that is the case and you already have the brown shoes you want to wear, go for the MacLeod and the brown sporran and belt for now. When you want to get the black set and another tartan, than go for the balck shoes.

For your first kilt, you don't need to buy everything fresh all at once. Try and incorporate what you already have in your closet. If you have brown shoes, match to those first. Whith brown accesories, I find that brown work boots or hiking boots also go well.
