    Newb in Hawaii

    Hello all!

My name is John, and I orginally hail from Greentown, Indiana. However, I am currently on board at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. I'm pretty much a "glorified" radioman with experience in "signals analysis." (Which means I pretty much just clean random objects all day)
As for kilts, I have always wanted to own but have never had the *ahem* monetary capabilities to support that dream. Fortunately for me, the government has granted me the "honor" of bestowing upon me a menial monthly payment for hours upon hours of tedious labor. Oorah! So with my new resources, I am finally in the market... Any suggestions for a newb?

    Welcome John,

Could you give us an idea of what type of kilt you want? Traditional tartan or non-tartan contemporary? Wool or synthetic? Scottish or Irish tartans? For casual wear, formal wear or both?

I was looking for a traditional Scottish tartan (most likely Black Watch) for more casual wear. For price reasons, I would most likely opt for something synthetic over wool and medium weight over heavy weight. The real problem I'm having, however, is finding a good, trustworthy website from which to order. Any suggestions?

Welcome, John. You will find a vast amount of knowledge here regarding kilts. Probably one of the first questions to ask yourself is "how/when will I be wearing this first kilt?" If you are looking for more formal occasions then informal/knocking about your best bet is a traditional. There are several very good traditional kiltmakers on this board. If more along the lines of where you would normally wear jeans than casual or cargo kilt would be the ticket. Try the links at the top of the page for some ideas. These are only some of the options available and all are great in their own ways. We might give you more advise than your drill sgt did during boot but it will be you that will need to make the decision. Good luck and enjoy.
