    Skills/Crafts

    I was sitting here eyeing the chaos in my "office" and this came to mind. Since I started wearing the kilt I've picked up several new skills.

    Sewing-I've made one traditional kilt and two canvas ones. Hemmed and repaired numerous others. Made a lot of flashes.

    leatherworking- made several belts and sporran straps. Sporrans are next.

    Diplomacy- dealing with questions and THE QUESTION.

    Fashion- what goes together and what doesn't.

    Knifemaking- Started on my first sgian dubh.

    To add to the "insanity" I'm in negotiations over a used loom.

    What have YOU picked up/learned since you donned the kilt?

    All of the above, minus the loom. With the added knowledge of how great I really am.

    Much more aware of wind dynamics.

    Mostly none of the things I've done was really new, but I did improve my sewing skills a great deal making a few kilts.

    Sewing mostly. With a machine. I've belted out 4 kilts now. Working on hand sewing another.

    Been wanting to get ahold of some leather and try making my own sporrans. Making a pair (or more) of ghillie brogues would be enjoyable. Some flashes are in my future.

    Getting some incite to making a sgian duhb would be cool.

    When the last of our kids left home, I made my first cotton casual kilt by hand.

    Since then:
    1) acquired heavy duty sewing machine for leather and upholstery;
    2) leatherworking for belts, sporrans, and diaper bags;
    3) skinning and tanning small furbearing mammals for sporrans;
    4) learned suppliers to collect suitable fabrics (incl. solids, tartans, patterned, camo), notions, and other supplies to make kilts and sporrans;
    5) haunt thrift stores;
    6) signed up for five days of advanced instruction in kiltmaking;
    7) use digital photography and processing to document my creations;
    8) overhauled my casual and outdoor wardrobe;
    9) joined a clan association and attend highland games;
    10) better social interaction (sometimes) with complete strangers;
    11) joined with wife in her new jewelry and beads hobby.

    Thre are probably a few others, but my brain is hurting...

    My musical horizons have also expanded. I find myself listening to a lot more Irish/Celtic music, and a lot of bagpipe tunes as well. It's rather fun to sing a traditional drinking song while kilted.

    It IS a big step. I've found a 4 year old Leclerc loom for sale and have spoken with the owner several times.
