Kilted hill walking - the good, bad and ugly of the $50 Ebay Tank

well, after far too long, here is the update on the $50 Ebay tank after wearing one for a week in the Berkshires of northwestern Massachusetts..

    Good:

    • the fabric on this thing is indestructible. Rain, Mud, thorns, sticks..nothing phased it.
    • This kilt kept me warm, no matter how cold or wet it was outside
    • The pleats stayed true the whole week, without a press
    • When it was actually hot out, the kilt breathed very well and kept me cool
    • there were no issues with wind grabbing the kilt. It is of sufficient weight to stay down on it's own

    Bad:
    • The leathers on this kilt suck. Get some new ones from Tartan Hiker, his are awesome.
    • The sewing on the kilt is done by hand with very cheap thread. if you don't run a line down each pleat at the top with a sewing machine or re-do it with strong thread, you will rip the thread in a few days and need to repair it.
    • The buckles are not attached as well as they should be. You should go over them once or twice with strong thread to ensure they stay on.
    • The 'underkilt' if you can call it that is attached very poorly, and the stitching came undone after two days of hard hiking ( with full pack). Be sure to tack it in place with strong thread to prevent this.

    Ugly:
no belt loops. for some reason this kilt tends to fall quickly ( maybe I am loosing weight and need a smaller belt!) but adding two belt loops would keep the belt in place.

overall, it is an excellent kilt for the money..PROVIDED you take the modification steps outlined above. If you don't, you will wind up with an 8-yard piece of tartan fabric in a month or so, with all the stitches fallen out.

there are pics of the kilt in action at http://www.kiltsrock.com/pics/survival-2006/

Great review. Those kilts sound like the type to wear when you need a kilt that will be "abused".

Thanks for the review. I'll have to look into getting this tank for games wear for $50.
