My BW Wool/poly Hiking Kilt
So after making a box pleat out of cotton/camo/canvas, I decided to make one from Wool/Poly blend that I got last week in Black Watch Tartan. My inspiration for this was the resurrected mountain kilt thread, Senior Newsome's excellent information, and my less than spectacular assessment of the combination of box pleats, cotton canvas and possibly getting the thing wet. The cotton camo box pleat has been confiscated by my girlfriends oldest and it somehow has made it to SanDiego since Friday night.
My requirements were, Wool or wool blend tartan, Approx 11 oz tartan, box pleats to achieve the look w/o packing 6 yards of material, full aprons, a waistband, simple washable Velcro closure tabs, machine sewn, and no belt loops to chaffe or bunch under packs etc...I also wanted it to look good and be usefull for day wear or pub crawling.
The PCS wanted to go hiking so we went to the Clovis Site near my house. It was a dreary day but hey it was cool and showering a little. What better way to test out a hiking kilt.
Here I am with my new BW hiking kilt, recently made caubeen, and my Kiltsrock.com shirt that was in the mail on the way to go hiking.
Here's a pleat picture too, with the storms it was quite windy. It moved the pleats around as you can see, but no real problems.
And without the pack, in the wind.
Here were our choices of destinations for the day. We are about 5 miles from Tombstone Arizona in this picture, and yes the ranch is those Clantons
Here is a picture of how it performs on the go.
A picture of the PCS 50 yards ahead as usual.
This is where the trail should have been. We got a couple of miles into it before I decided we'd better bet back across before rain made it impossible.

And Kathy Lare, www.kathyskilts.com was trained to make military box pleats at the Keith Kilt School in Scotland.
So, there you have a selection of at least three, O'Neille, Matt, and Kathy.

Here are some nice desert flowers that some may find enjoyable.
PCS lagging behind on the way back.
That's one happy hiker, Photos of me by PCS. That's my girl. I've got some P/V that is just screaming to become hiking kilt #3. Maybe next weeks hike will showcase that one.

I carry a snake bite kit in the pack and a cell phone. I was probably within inches of venimous snakes today yet you usually never even know it. Besides that, lack of water and sunburn are much more dangerous.
I've made her one but she doesn't like the itchy wool. Her next one will be camo as requested. O'Neille
