1st Anniversary at X Marks/1st Self-made Kilt

I've actually had this finished for a couple of weeks now, but I was waiting until my usual photographer was available (no tripod) and it was a little closer to the anniversary of my join date.

Anyway -
10 oz. cotton duck
reverse kinguisse pleated - like RKilts and Utilikilts
left-hand strap fastens inside - like Matt Newsome's kilts
based on the instructions from Barb's book
mistakes - all my own


I think I may have to redo the left edge of the overapron - the pleat curl is a little annoying.

And a close-up of the fastening - straps are extra material trimmed off, and curved fastbreak buckles.


I was going to use traditional brass buckles, but this thread got me thinking about kilted travelling - no problem with metal detectors here.

Well done. I'm inspired to give it a go myself. How long did it take you to make? hand-stiched or machine?

Looks good, but I think that I would have gone for a lower rise on a solid color kilt. Just me, but I think that a solid color looks more contemporary and most contemporary kilts are lower rise.

That, right there represents a BLINKING lot of work. GOOD ON YA for tackling it, mate, and be proud of the results.

Let's see - in no particular order:

• completely machine-stitched
• lost track of the amount of time, mainly because I would measure and pin, and then it would sit for a week and a half before I visited my folks (and my mother's sewing machine - see above)
• I wasn't going for the low, contemporary waistline, but the waist is a little higher than I intended. I think I've corrected this for kilt #2.
• tightness - take kilt pictures before supper, not after. And if after, adjust the straps.

Good job. I myself have made a few Kilts, mainly due to the cost. I made one kilt from a nice brown wool fabric, I copied from a Stillwater heavyweight. Next on the list is a Kilt made from Carharrt canvas like a Utilikilt.
