Trouble with flashes
ok, so I've got a big to-do this weekend, and I've just recieved my new PC ( Jacket and Vest, will need a wee bit of tailoring, but that is later), new sgain, a formal sporran, everything but the kilt, belt and sporran strap.
here is the trouble. As we all know my MacTavish (Thompson Red) kilt is far to large thanks to the vendor. I'm going to wear the wonderful Irish Saffron Heavyweight I just received off the Stillwater Scratch and Dent ( it has a two inch run in one of the pleats...never even notice it!). Of course, I didn't order flashes.
I have three sets of flashes. Red, Black and MacTavish (Thompson Red). My sporran is a greyish bovine fur. My hose will be white and bowtie is black.
I need some ideas as to what flashes would would look best!

Black. No question. The black flashes on white hose will coordinate nicely with the jacket, waistcoat and tie against a white shirt.
The others would not work at all.

I agree.
BTW . . . "white" hose?? Or off-white / cream?

white to match my shirt...it is a Tuxedo affair, and I want to be ever-so sure that I don't look like any of the penquins...

Essentially, the flash color depends on the rest of the outfit. With a saffron (I assume the brownish, common tone, rather than the more correct btight yellow meaning of the term), black would probably look best, out of the "common color" flashes. With a white shirt and black PC jacket, white socks/hose and black flashes are probably the best combo, setting off the saffron of the kilt, framed in black and white.
I wonder how saffron flashes would look and where to get them, if they are even made?

I think flashes should have the same colour as the kilt when it's a plain kilt.
When you wear a tartan kilt, tartanflashes or plain flashes matching one of the prominent colors of the tartan.
When you wear, diced, argylle or tartan hose, plain flashes (tie-them-yourself) matching a striking color of the tartan, but not the most prominent color of the hose when possible....so they will stand out nicely.
I don't think black flashes are a good choise (Sorry Bob...we clash again )
PS....Maybe a good idea for those who order a plain colored kilt...ask for some spare material or a swatch, so you can make matching flashes yourself.

Gaian, I would disagree with you on this one. I could never see myself in black hose with a PC. Given KT's choices, I'd go with black flashes, although I'd wear saffron flashes if I had them in an exact match. My C$.02.

I would wear the black flashes with cream, off white, or wheat colored kilt hose.

Has ANYONE seen ribbon in a fabric or craft store in Saffron (in the brown-ish shade)????
If one has, PLEASE tell the many on this board who own saffron kilts! Flashes are NOT hard to make, though fabric ones take a good bit more time than cut, coterized (sp?), and sewn grosgrain ribbon.
Black hose with saffron flashes would look NICE (thanks, Todd, for the pic).
What do ya'll think of a saffron with white hose?

Noooo.... but how about white spray painted with the right color - might work in a pinch.
What?
I know.... Red Green would use duck tape.
