    It's here!

Well after 9 long days of waiting, my SWK Black Watch arrived!

Kudos to SWK - The construction is excellent and the fabric has a very nice feel, if a bit light. It's a fantastic looking kilt, and I'm quite pleased. The unfortunate bit is that I think I have to return it for a smaller size. It seems I must have overestimated my girth and it just barely fits on the tightest notch. This worries me a bit about the traditional wool kilt I have on order, as it was 46" waist as well. Anyways I thought the size was fine at first so I removed the stitches .. but after wearing it around I think it's definately too big, so I'll have to see about exchanging it.

It is definately a bit light - not quite as nice of a feel as the 16oz wool I have tried before, but it is very nice and aside from the size I'm very happy with it.

I also got the economy sporran .. and it's .. well it's an economy sporran. It's not bad and will do for now, but I will definately want to get something a bit nicer very soon.

    Unhappy uh oh...

I hate to be the one to break it to you. But, if you've already removed the basting stitches (as you've mentioned) You're not going to be able to exchange it. There should be written notice of that on the invoice or an insert in there (can't remember which.) Most any kilt sales that sale of the peg have this "rule." You can always get the straps moved though... It's easier to make a big kilt small than a small kilt big. I have that econo sporran as well, I have absolutely no complaint with it. It has the "look" for not much cash. I wear it when I need something a little more "sharp" than my nylon nightstalker sporran.

Yeah I know that may be the case. Can't hurt to ask though. If not I can look at getting the straps moved.

I agree the sporran is great - especially for the money.

I think you move the buckles on the right side and the strap on the under-apron. To go smaller, the buckles would move rearward and the strap towards the center.

If this is not right I'm sure I will be corrected.

Well unfortunately I'm not going to be able to exchange it, which is fine. I figured that for the cost of shipping it there and back, I could easily get it altered (or even do it myself). Stillwater is sending me a diagram to help. In actual fact, with a smaller size I'd be worried it wouldn't fit around the hips, because it's almost perfect there.

I wore it for most of last night and really it's fine, as long as I don't lose weight (which I badly need to do). I'll leave it for now and if I manage to lose the pounds I need to, then I'll worry about moving the buckles or getting it altered.

It's a beautiful kilt and extremely comfortable. Sitting down is obviously a bit of an art though .. I keep gettin the pleats bunched up. Usually takes me 2 or 3 tries before I get it right .. practice I guess ..

Now I just need a belt .. that will be saturday's task. I am tempted to wear this to my office christmas party on saturday .. except that I dont have black shoes, or a jacket, or a dress sporran .. and being color blind (and with the wife out of town) I'd be afraid to try and pick out a tie that matches it .. ;)

When I purchased my first SWK (Nightstalker Standard) I bought a 42, which seemed right, and my 5 yd wool kilt was the same. When I received it I found the same thing you did. It fit me at the tightest notch. But, my weight fluctuates some, and I've never had any problems keeping it wrapped around my bum. When I ordered my Irish Saffron wool from them, I ordered it in a 40. It's fine in the waist, but the bottom right strap (for the hips) has to be on the last notch. So, you're correct, if you ordered a smaller size you might have come into a problem with it being too small at the hips. It sounds like you've purchased the right size overall.

Depending on how formal your office party is, you could wear a sweater in a neutral color (black, off-white, navy, etc.) . . . the sweater would cover up a belt anyway. I frequently wear a solid black tie with my black watch. If it's not a formal event, a daytime sporran will work. Pretty much need the black shoes.

Well, good luck with your kilt. I hope you find a decent belt and buckle. (Had several problems with mine...) And yeah, sitting down requires a bit of practice.

If you are having problems sweeping the pleats check out Ham's vid.

Good luck on the repositioning the strap and buckle.
