Cunningham and Montrose-> Rob Roy movie
I was recently in yet another discussion on what to make of the end to the Liam Neeson Rob Roy movie.
PLOT SPOILER-> if not yet seen the movie!!!
In it, Montrose leans over the body and takes the locket from around Archie's neck. In the locket is a picture of Archie's mother.
Within the plot/subplot, Archie is a bastard (in the actual "illegitimate child" sense), and doesn't know who his father really is.
I have ALWAYS taken the end to mean that Montrose is the actual father of Cunningham, which explains why he takes care of him and extends his SO much leyway. Am I off basis on this one? Am I over/misreading this part of the movie?

That was the same impression I got.

My reading of it she was his sister and he was symbolically isolating the family from Archie, but I can see how he being the father could be drawn from that.

All very interesting and intrigueing observations to say the least, and not something I thought much about before, even having seen the movie more than a half dozen times. I'm usually full of adrenaline by the time they end the movie at that pointe, so.... I have to say, though I think the rest of the movie is top notch, the finale fight seen is really lame in as much as suspension of disbelief is concerned. That is my only disappointment in the whole movie, even after seeing it so many times.
Good thread.

I've always assumed that was the reason as well, father and son.

I remember quite a ways back, there was an extensive thread on Rob Roy...search the forums and see if you can find it!

Haven't seen it in some time, but I always thought he was Archie's father. I liked the movie, but what I couldn't get past was Rob refusing immediate medical care with all those wounds and riding off to be fixed up by his wife. Oh well, as they say, its just a movie.
Best regards,

Historical Rob Roy
Hi Gents,
On a literary note, there are some good books about the life of Rob Roy.
While W.H. Murray's classic [I]Rob Roy MacGregor: His Life and Times is a wonderful read, recently David Stevenson has published The Hunt For Rob Roy: The Man and the Myths, which represents the first academic biography of this character to appear in print.

I didn't see it that way, at all. If you recall, Montrose, as he removed the locket, asked, "What will I tell his mother?" It seemed to be his only concern, and not asked with much emotion.
