    Glasgow University Tartan

As part of the 550th anniversary celebrations, Glasgow University launched its own tartan in 1999. The distinctive colours match those of the University's coat of arms and symbolise key elements of the histories of both the University and the city of Glasgow.

Based on the story of Glasgow's founder, St Kentigern (or St Mungo), the University crest depicts the four elements with which he is commonly associated: his bell, the dead tree which he set alight, the robin which he restored to life, and the salmon and ring which feature in his last miracle. The University Mace and a book of learning are also represented.

The colours of the tartan, which was specially designed for the University, reflect those used in the crest * blue for the River Clyde, green for the tree, white for the University Mace and gold for the bell. Since the tartan was launched, the University Visitor Centre has stocked an extensive variety of items, including ties, caps and waistcoats.

Clicking on clothing in the link leads to an illustration of a cummerbund in Glasgow University Tartan. As a Glasgow graduate this is another tartan which I would be entitled to wear but I don't know if its available in kilt fabric.

As I too am a Glasgow graduate, I had a kilt made in the Glasgow University tartan by Geoffrey (Tailor) in 2003. It is 8yds of their Auld Reekie 1 quality wool.

This kilt and the tartan have been greatly admired - especially by my fellow GU grads in the Oxford Society of Glasgow University Graduates (OSGUG) but also by my family. Definitely a tartan to wear with pride.

I have a girlcousin that is attending the University of Glasgow as a freshman this year. She is just ending her 1st simester. I may have to do something for her with the tartan.

For those of you that wonder why I say "girlcousin" let me edjacate 'ya. Here in the southern U.S. it does not matter if you are male or female. You have cousins & you have girlcousins. Just plain cousins are always male.

Sounds nice, maybe you can post some pics sometime.
