Traditional garters from Matt Newsome
Here is a picture of my black traditional garters and grey hose from Matt Newsome. The garters are extremely comfortable and easy to put on. The best part is they don't cut off the blood flow to the lower leg!
I'm going to grab another pair, I suggest if you are interested you do the same. Thanks Matt.

David: They're on the list! As soon as I decide on which tartan to order from Matt, I'll be bumping some of the flashes onto the paypal disbursement.

I purchased the black to start with because I figured that they would match up well with just about anything.

Thanks for the plug, David! And more importantly I'm glad you are happy with the garters. We started carrying them in our shop after I was intrduced to the company at the Stone Mountain Highland Games in October. I have to say that since then I have not worn a single pair of the usual elastic garters.
I have three sets of these traditional garters that I use -- brick red, loden green, and charcoal. I find that between these colors I can match pretty much any kilt I have. (I may need to add a blue in the near future).
I just cannot over emphasize how comfortable these are. You especially can tell at the end of the day when you realize that you cannot even feel them on your leg!
Aye,
Matt

Those garters are tempting. You can read about them here. Matt also has a good how-to here.
I like it that you can adjust the tension without relying on elastic. And they're easy on the peepers to boot.
And no, I don't work for Matt or on commission or anything like that. :) They're just cool garters, that's all.

How much stretch do these garters have? I'm asking because I have larger calves and I wonder if they can go around my legs twice.
Also, would they look okay with formal wear, or are they too "rustic"?

They are about one yard in length, and yes they do have some stretch, but I wouldn't bank that into the overall measurement. If you don't think one yard is enough for your particular calf size, I wouldn't risk it.
As to the second questions, they look great with formal wear. These are all I wear now, formal or casual.
