    Tatting fringe

Is there anything for it other than sitting here with a sailmaker's needle worrying out a thread at a time?

I'd like to know the same... it does seem to get tedious.

I fringed 2 shawls in 10 oz. worsted one inch deep for my 2 daughters, 54" on a side, and overcast the result. Did the same on a mini-plaid in 16 oz., 54x22. Took about 2.5 hours for each one, including the sewing. You get so you can pull out 3-5 threads at a time, especially before the fringe gets too long. If you're fringing for a kilt apron, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

If you're making a fringe, make several small cuts up the edge that is being fringed so that the threads you are pulling out are shorter. Cut at a right angle to the edge into the material. When you finally reach the width of fringe your desire, the threads will be being pulled out whole. This works great and makes the job so much faster and easier. Plus, you're not as likely to snag or pull the material out of shape.
