I work for the Commonwealth of PA, I also wear kilts whenever I am not at work. Soon that will change too. Monday is a holiday for the State (Martin Luther King Day) because if the project I am on we have been asked to work on Monday, a few of us have agreed to work. But if I am going to give up a holiday, I decided that I should be comfortable while doing it. I decided to ask my boss if I could wear a kilt to work on Monday as it will be a light staff. Here is the e-mails that went back and fourth:

Boss, (real name concealed to protect the innocent)
Since it is going to be a short staff on Monday would it be OK for me to wear a kilt that day?

So I may start wearing the kilt on 'casual' Friday's to get people used to it. Let's see I have 6 of my 9 kilts I would probably wear to work, so that should do the job for now.

Monday will be my county Cavan kilt from Rocky as the Sabres play on Monday and I will be listening to the game in the background.

I guess the moral of the story is that if you are afraid to ask you never know the answer if you ask you may be surprised by the answer.

I guess that I can think of only one reason that any company/employer/boss would prefer that one not wear the kilt and that's only because of the potential "disruption" that it might cause...lots of questions and comments and non-business oriented discussion that would take away from "productivity". Sorry about the quotes but I mean them to indicate buzz-words that are sort of linguistic life-preservers for folks speaking office-speak to cling to when they're trying to make what they say sound official...indeed, isn't anything that you say in an office official?

As I've said in previous posts, I see a lot of dress that seems downright slovenly and that has no place out in public let alone the workplace. There are still folks running around in their pajama pants hereabouts...we actually saw a guy in a pair of those "zoobaz" pants the other day but they were Chicago Bears zoobaz pants (probably had them since the 1985 Super Bowl and he's been saving them since then just in case...) so I'm sure that that makes it all right. The young guys with the baggy pants hanging down past their underwear is one thing but I actually saw a kid wearing those pencil-thin pants at that same level...I sincerely hope that this K-fed wannabe doesn't have to run for a bus...

....my point being that I really can't understand what the big deal is...having seen other X-er's photos on the forum, everybody looks downright dressed up relative to the average schmoe...even when they're going casual...glad that you've broken through the "plaid-ceiling" at work...maybe they'll get the message that a kilt is just a clothing choice...one with certain cultural connections but a clothing choice all the same.

Nicely done, I started by wearing my kilt to the office "International Night" after witch I was asked to wear it more often by the staff, ok mostly by the women I work with, but now I can wear it anytime I want and nobody asks why, it is just accepted.

Excellent; kilts will become more commonplace when they begin to be worn more often as everyday work clothing.
