    Unmentionables

    Amonst the thoughtful gifts I received this Christmas was a day by day calendar from my son. This one features obscure and archaic English words - my son knows I am a language buff.

    I was having a browse through it today and the entry for 26th Jan ( that's Jan 26 for our US buddies ) caught my eye:

    "Inexpressibles, Unmentionables"
    Trousers or breeches... an article of dress not to be mentioned in polite circles. -- William Whitney's Century Dictionary 1889

    Yes, that sums it up for me!

    Slainte!

    Wow, where are you from? Our calendar is on the 19th of January and we have another week to go before we hit the 26th. Don't you know the "rule" of day by day calendars - Don't peek ahead and don't tear off the top glue part, see if you can go the whole year without it coming off. haha That is mine and my son's rule for these calendars!

    Keep us informed if you run into any words relating to kilts.

    DALE.

    You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

    Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

    This is a polite forum. We don't speak of such things here.

    I wonder who decided to pull that from current dictionaries. I still believe trousers need not be mentioned!

    Ah ha! An opportunity to get on my soap box:

    <soapbox rant>
    As this world gets smaller and smaller we need to eliminate misunderstandings amonst those of us who "... are separated by a common language" (George Bernard Shaw).

    When we specify a time of day we always do it in hours-minutes[-seconds] format (coarsest to finest resolution). Why do we not do the same with dates? There is an international date and time standard, ISO 8601, that, in brief, states that the date format shall be YYYY-MM-DD which is unabiguous.

    Anytime I write the date whether it's by hand or not, I now use the ISO 8601 format and encourage everyone else to do the same. This web site could easily be upgraded (mike1) to use the international format - after all we are an international group.
    </soapbox rant>
