    Question which colour of leather?

    g'day folks!

I am a very happy recipient of my first kilt - a weathered Lamont in heavyweight wool from Stillwater Kilts. However, this happy event has struck a small snag....

What colour leather do I wear with it?!

Many here will be aware of the weathered Lamont from SWK... it has grey as a predominant colour, with thick brown and thinner black stripes forming the tartan pattern.

Can I wear black leather with the Lamont, or should I stick with brown? I look forward to hearing from those more knowledgeable than I.

    cheers

I'd say brown, but only if you have it.

If you don't, no worries. Black will do.

That said, it is a good excuse to get some brown kit.

I saw a white sporran with gray trim someplace online that I always thought would look nice with with the SWK Lamont.

Brown looks best IMHKO. Buuuuut, as Dread pointed out: black will do. It's really an either or situation you see.

I should not hand out fashion advice. I wear a black sporran with brown leather hiking boots.

Black goes with EVERYTHING. In a previous thread, an exalted member mentioned that he thought brown was a little more casual. I say use what you've got or buy some gear in each colour. You can never have too many accessories!

Brown is not more casual but the style for day wear in the countryside. Brown leathers are suitable to day attire but not evening. Evening calls for black or white (buff leather or courlene) with shinny (silver) fitments. Coatee and vest are not worn with belts and brown belts are not worn, by convention, with evening Jackets or sporrans with metal cantles (even those with brown fur or horsehair).

What about day wear in town? Is black or brown leather conventionally worn?

    Thanks

Personally, I wear brown during the day for casual wear and black for evening or with a tie, regardless of tartan. One can always wear black, though. Brown should be worn in casual situations only, in my opinion.

Black or Brown, just not I repeat NOT Black and Brown, of course this all depends on what shirt, jacket, kilt hose, flashes, etc, that you are wearing.

That being said you can always bend or even break the rules, you just have to have the right attitude.

I agree McMurdo. For example the man in the center of this picture is a native born Scotsman representing Glenmorangie Whisky. He mixed brown and black, and yet the heavens did not crack, nor did the ground swallow him up.
