Advice from our kilt makers please

As I mentioned in another post, my daughter is getting married in the May/June timeframe. Her fiance is a police officer in Clive, IA. One of the things that she has been toying with is a celtic wedding. Yesterday, after reading the thread Norbydog started on the LEO tartan idea, I sent her an email mentioning and showing the two Iowa tartans along with the International Police Association tartan.

So, this evening she sends back:
Ok, Doug thinks the police tartan is sooooooooo cool. Here's an idea- He gets a kilt made in the police tartan and I get a Livingston skirt, white top and a police tartan sash. any ideas on how or where we can get this done??

    Now for the questions:
    1. Is is possible to get the IPA tartan for him?
    2. I'm not so sure about the Livingston skirt and IPA sash going together either.
    3. If it is possible to get the IPA, how long of a lead time would we need and an idea for the cost of the tartan?

I know that a more "standard" tartan would be much quicker but it is my daughters wedding we're talking about

    Thanks for any assistance.

Kilt store lists the IPA tartan:

I'd just contact them about lead time and availability.

...and this is just one man's opinion but I really do think that those two tartans would totally clash.

Notice that this is a custom weave, and that the cost is for _single width_ tartan. So an 8 yard kilt would require 8 yards, not 4. That's perilously close to $600 just for the tartan.

Livingston - both Matt Newsome and I commonly order custom weaves from DC Dalgliesh in Scotland, and their current price is considerably less than this. You could PM either of us about ordering tartan and having a kilt made from it.

    Cheers,

    Barb

ooooh...didn't see that it was woven to order...yeah, that would be a bit steep...I only consulted the Kiltstore website out of curiousity as a quick reference to see what the deal was and erroneously assumed that it was a stock item and not "custom" work. Sorry if that muddied the waters at all.

No, actually it didn't muddy the waters at all. The KiltStore web site is a great way to find out if a tartan is commercially available or not. If the KiltStore has to get it as a custom weave, then it's very unlikely that it's being woven as commercial stock.

Thank you for the PM and offer to bid in on these kilts but I'm afraid I'm not your kiltmaker for these two. I don't do the kind of work you need here. My needle and thread work is terrible.
Go with one of our traditional kiltmakers and you will not regret the decision.

Ummm... thumbs down on the sash/skirt mix. Ouch.

    In My Humble Opinion.

However, she could wear the sash at the ceremony and the skirt at the reception.

BTW, if she googles "tartan wedding dress", her eyeballs will pop out. So will your checkbook.

She might consider building the dress around a tartan corset...I've seen a couple of shots on the internet where that was done. Our august innkeeper, Pour1Malt, has posted photos of his and Emma's wedding somewhere here on Xmarks and Emma's ensemble might serve as an inspiration for the young lady.

I would personally love to get a tartan corset for Mrs. Argon but it would, I fear, be something that would be relegated to the closet and never worn...oh well...

I have always liked simple elegance. It would be my suggestion, and it is the brides choice, that the wedding dress be white not overly fancy with a sash over the shoulder. As she comes in to the church she has a Livingston sash over her shoulder. After the marriage is finalize and the husband kisses the bride the best man or ring bearer steps forward with a IPA sash. The new husband pins the IPA sash on to his new bride in a way to cover the Livingston.

This could signify his welcoming her into his family, and if done correctly hide the clash between the IPA and Livingston tartans. During the reception she could change into a Livingston skirt with a white blouse and a small IPA rosette on the shoulder. The rosette should be far enough away and small enough not to make the clashing tartans to bad.

Having said all this it should be noted that my wife has to coordinate my clothes or she will not let me out of the house.
