    Thoughts on Black Chrome Buckles?

I've been looking for something a bit different for a buckle. What are your thoughts about a buckle with a black chrome finish something like this? (only not in the shape of a wheel )

I like the idea, and would love to see a buckle with a finish like that.

I'd like to see a buckle in that finish, and round, just no spokes.

I'm thinking a pin that big will drag your kilt down around your ankles...

I like round buckles too. It would be simpler to do it in steel, highly polish it, then gun blue it. Brownell's oxynate #7 produces a black that is as near to dead black as anything I have ever seen, and it is still as shiny as whatever finish you put on it first. Black chrome would be cool too, but it takes more gear to do it. And as a commercial venture, there would have to be more pieces to get it done reasonably. I think. I dunno much about plating though, so I could be wrong about the cost on that. Most of the cost for custom plating like car/bike parts is in the polishing time. If it was already polished, the plating might not be much. Maybe a 12 pack on friday afternoon at the chrome shop. ;) You neer know.

How about powder coating??? Would that work? I have a cycle frame that is powder coated and it is very durable! Not black chrome, but it is black and shiny.

Caswell makes kits that will plate just about anything. There si a technique to it to do it well without burning the finish, but all in all it's not to difficult.

The company I work for during the day has a paint shop that works with Kynar paints (20 year warranty ) I've thought about trying to have a few buckles painted there when they're running some other metal through but just have not pursued it yet.

Black chrome has it's place, but one should be careful in using it. To me it's a very industrial look that may not translate well with a traditional kilt look. Titanium is the new chrome and could work as a pewter alternative.
