I have had the pleasure of having seen Mr. Waits back when he performed in actual clubs where they had a cover charge and served drinks...now he plays big venues and the ticket prices are steep enough that the price of one ticket would have paid for the whole night out for three or four of us. Those were the good old days...
But, I would recommend the album "Small Change", which is the one that "Tom Traubert's Blues" comes from. A couple of the later albums that are just plain outstanding are "The Mule Variations" and "Alice"...especially "Alice"...that one just gives me the chills.
Lots of Waits videos on YouTube...I guess that he enjoys the exposure.
I really enjoy "Small Change" and often listen to it right after playing "Heart of Saturday Night" which is not only my favorite Tom Waits album, it is my favorite album of contemporary music.

Tom Waits is awesome! Nighthawks At The Diner is one of my favorite CDs.
