Hemming Suggestions
I just bought my first kilt (used). It is too long, and I do not know anything about hemming. Do any of the sponsors for X Marks the Scot do alterations? What other options do I have? I am not very confident in my local tailors after reading some of the threads on hemming and hearing what the tailors said about cutting my kilt. Can you help out a newbie?

I can suggest a blind hem stitch, lots of thread, and lots of patience. I just finished repairing the hem of one of my kilts and it takes a lot of time in order to do it right. Some sewing machines can do a blind hem stitch but I don't have one. Once that's done, it's a good idea to press the pleats again.

Firstly check out this excellent thread.
Secondly make sure you actually need to hem it. My first kilt was a an SWK with a 24" length. After discussing on this forum, if i wear this traditional styled kilt at the traditional height (2" above the navel) the length fell to mid knee. No alteration needed and the kilt looks super.

I appreciate your input and advice. I do not feel confident enough to venture this on my own. As for the length of the kilt, it is a traditional 16oz MacNaughton wool tartan that has 26inch drop. It needs to be a 21.5 inch drop. Your informationon the Sportskilt is very helpful as it sounds that a 24 inch will drop about mid knee for me. I am considering buying an Army tartan Works kilt from Sportskilt.

Thanks for the advice. I do not feel comfortable doing the work myself, but the thread was very informative. The information about the Sportskilt was also helpful as I am looking at purchasing an Army tartan Works kilt from Sportskilt.
Thanks again.

No apologies scary there is a wealth of information on this forum, It takes a long time to wade through it. Problem is you find some item of great interest and it sends you on yet another tangent. Questions are always welcome.

4.5 inches is an awful lot to take up in a hem. You may find that the fell (where the stitching of the pleats end) will be much too low.
