Kilted in a mosque
Hi all,
The Montreal Islamic community orgainized this weekend an open house of 13 mosques around the city to explain what Islam really is.
You can guess that I took the chance to go t there kilted. I knew that garments like shorts are not permited in these premises. In the worst case scenario I would not be allowed to enter.
To gain some time I didn't put my brogues but a pair of sneakers to be removed fast as required by the Islamic code.![Cool](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)
Everything went very well. I told the iman that I hoped that my dress was correct and it was. They explained that that a person wearing a short will be
granted entry depending of the lenght.
Try it, this was an enjoyable experience.

Good for you! I am in favour of broadening ones knowledge whenever possible. With all the turmoil in the world regarding religion and ethnicity, being informed is a valuable weapon against bigotry.

It sounds like you approached the situation with considerable consideration & diplomacy - good for you. I'm glad the experience went well for you.
As one who believes that actions speak much louder than words, I'm afraid I would have a difficult time hearing what you're local imam said, though, because of the deafening din of violence from so many of his Islamic brethren in so many locations around the world today. ![Evil or Very Mad](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_evil.gif)

The din of violence speaks in many tongues. Respect is a quiet yet powerful force for peace. Let this thread remain focused on a very positive cross cultural experience. These should be encouraged as when enough of them happen perhaps they can muffle that din to a barely heard whisper.

This is a better thought, and one far more appropriate to this forum.
Let's keep this about parpin's experience.

Well for sure the Muslims there were used to men in unbifurcated garments.
Long before the current unpleasentness enjoyed the friendship of an unbifurcated Muslim that would show up at the Federal Correctional Facility in Pioneer, Arizona at the same time I would. He was taking the Muslim word in for Muslim inmates at the same time I was going in for the prison AA meeting. A very cheerful and intelligent guy as we got to know each other better on our prison nights and in the various required prison volunteer trainings.
Wonder what the prison staff would have done if I'd showed up kilted, they had no issue with his Traditional unbifurcated garment.
Know we couldn't wear pants that were the same color as the inmates or the corrections officers....wanna think it wouldn't have been a problem.
Okay, sorry, drifting off track...really cool to blend cultures like you did...nice that unbifurcated is the common ground.

Very cool! Glad that you had a good experience AND that you were kilted. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I have to do a paper based on an interview with a local religious leader; I'm thinking of calling the Islamic community in the neighboring town.
