How about a box pleat in the under apron?

Just an idea. Aside from tradition, is there
any reason no to put one wide box pleat
in the under apron? It seems like it would
make modesty a little easier, particularly
in the more puritan parts of the USA.

In my case, where my waist size isn't
exactly stable, it would be easier to
    accommodate the expanding width
    with minimal re-stitching.

It would also help balance the weight,
if only a little, on a rear-heavy tank.

Utilikilts does this. Personally, I find that it chafes a bit and doesn't do a lick of good for modesty. YMMV.

There already is a box pleat in a Traditional Knife Pleated kilt. It is just to the right edge of the under apron.

We call it the reverse pleat. It is there for just the reasons you state.

It's brother on the other side is called the deep pleat.

They allow for more fabric at the apron edges to allow you to prevent modest problems, and if you back them up with hidden pleats you have extra fabric for re-sizing the kilt if necessary.

    I wear the kilt because:

I was just thinking the same thing this weekend. I was wearing my kilt at my sons college parents day. We sat down on some low and deep (artsy) couch in the art building and my wife came over and said I was exposing myself. Needless to say the sporran was low and the material was pushed all the way it would go but because of the couch it didn't quite cover. I have not had the problem with a utilikilt but the pleats in the wool are too far away.

When the seat I am in doesn't provide the optimum positions for modesty, I find it best to just spread my legs more and everything seems to fall into place.
