    Post Highland Flag?

This is a new one on me -- I found it today whilst searching for information on the new flag of the Orkney Islands.

    The Highland flag

The Highlands of Scotland has a long, unique history. It is quite rightly described as one of the most scenic regions of Europe thanks to its diverse and beautiful mountains, lochs and wildlife. The Highlands has its own language in Gaelic, culture, history, sports, music and is distinctly different from the rest of Scotland. This is why many believe the area deserves its own flag to fly with pride alongside the St Andrew's Saltyre [sic] of Scotland. You can read all about the Highland flag on the www.highlandflag.org.uk website.
Unfortunately, the web site cited above [highlandflag.org.uk] is no longer "in service". The flag itself is my avatar; I personally like the look of it. The flag uses the "Nordic Cross" design of Shetland, Orkney, etc.

Has any of our Scots members heard of this flag before?

    Cheers,

    Todd

No, never seen it before. It certainly looks derived from the flags of the Scandanavian countries.

Exactly. It's very similar to the Shetland flag, which is based on the Norwegian flag, since Norway controlled Shetland at one time.

Yep. Found that this morning. Pity there's no detailed list of sources.

Interesting though. Perhaps it shows a Nordic influence in all of those places.

I was going to say the same thing Todd. I was wondering what the flag was.

As someone who collects the flags of the nations I have visited, I am always interested in a new flag. By the way, I have 19 now, counting the US flag.

I'm not sure I like the Nordic look of the flag. I like the idea of a highland flag though, and I know that Shetland and Orkney have Nordic crosses, but I think a highland flag could have something a bit more unique.

And here I thought you hated finns and your avatar was the anti-Finnish flag...
I guess I don't mind the nordic feel of it, I like Scandanavia and there are definitely links between the two. That said, when I saw it, I thought "Why did he mangle a Scandanavian flag?" I never would have guessed it was the Highland Flag.
Did a bunch of MacDougall's design it?
