Book and Article About Scotland
I just read an interesting article my parents sent me from the Seattle Times: Scot Free. The information in the article mirrors much of what I read in another reference from my parents. They sent me "Modern Scottish Culture" (ISBN 0748620273) by Michael Gardiner as a Christmas present.
I suspect Gardiner wrote this book for use as a text in one of his classes (he teaches at Chiba University in Japan) and it probably fulfilled a professional obligation for publication. When I was in college, I always found these kinds of books to be a little more opinionated than other texts, so I'll want to read a few more texts on the subject before I solidify my own opinions. That reservation aside, I thought Gardiner's book was an interesting description of Scottish culture. It helps me to know a little more about the people from whom I have borrowed the kilt.

You might want to clean up the URL on that link...it has a couple of spurious "'s and "http's"....I'm not sure how to do it...
Never heard of the "Scottish Cringe" but I'm sure that that's what some of us were asking about in the "Kilts in Scotland" thread.
It seems that the article is saying that things are on the upswing in Scotland.

Bingo!
The article is quite political in nature, as is nearly every discussion that might come up about the 'Cringe', so I'm obviously reluctant to say much more. But, yes, you've identified a large part of what lies behind that earlier discussion.

The article made me "cringe" to be honest, its perspective is a bit off, and there are some inaccuracies but anything that brings scotland to the forefront is a good thing.

Thanks for the article. I will check out the book.
There are a few good books about Modern Scotland at Luath Press, actually there are just a lot of good Scottish books at Luath:

The referenced thread spawned What Makes a Scot? in this off-topic section. I thought that second thread was one of the ugliest I've seen here. The cited article and book discuss some of the issues that make people so passionate - and rude.
