Cunningham kilt--big pics
Sometime back, my brother and I purchased about 9 yards of double width 16oz Cunningham tartan from Tartan Store. The beautiful wool was shipped to my Grandmother Cunningham to make tanks for us both. She has never made a kilt before, but armed with a copy of Barb's book (a Christmas present from yours truly) and her years of sewing experience she set out. Technically this is not a DIY for me, I cant sew a stitch but I figured you all might like to see the progress. She sends me pics every now and then on how the kilts are coming. Here's the progress so far. (Sorry for the big pics, I tried to edit but to no avail).
Pleated to the stripe
pleat cut-out
Interfacing?
Now, she has told me there will be 2 yards or so extra. I'm not real sure what to do with those. I wouldnt mind having a fly plaid for my brother and I, but is that enough wool? or I was thinking a pair of trews for each of us? Again, I have no idea how much fabric these kinds of things take. Any input and comments welcome. I think my Grand Mum is doing a wonderful job so far!
Regards,
Bishop

Wow these look really good. No doubt the rabble will want to place some orders with your grandmother.
As a Cunningham, I eagerly look forward to seeing pics of the completed kilts being worn.

Flashes could be made from the pleat cut outs so IF the 2 yds of fabric is double width, you could have another kilt. A box pleat this time.

OFCJAX is right, 2 yards of double width fabric is enough for a box pleated kilt. On the other hand, if you and your brother want to split it, you could make two fly plaids from it. Or use it to make vests for each of you to match your kilt.

When I buy fabric for a kilt, I always buy the yardage I need for the kilt. If I make a 6 yard kilt, I buy 6 yards. Period. Double width or not. Usually, this means I get to make myself two kilts.
I point this out because that means I have, essentially, 6 yards of single width Dress Stewart up in my closet. I used it as a really thick fly this past ren faire season... for warmth on chilly Connecticut days.
Matt... you have now given me an idea. Mayhaps I will have my lovely bride try her hand at producing me a doublet from the extra Dress Stewart I have. It should go quite nicely with the Dress Stewart kilt I made for myself back in February '07.
As for the Cunningham kilt this thread discusses... I find that tartan to be very nice looking. I also find that the Grandma in question must be one great Grandma.
