Scotland The Brave
It is just amazing how kilt spreading over the pond. No other national garment brings same attention as kilt does. Definitely, Scotsmen have done something to this civilization. But lats face it, kilt isn't just a national form of dress that belongs to Scott anymore. It's an international form of male garment. And now tartan represents our heritage not kilt itself, otherwise I personally don't see any point in any Canadian or American tartans (how about Chines-American tartan for instants) if only Scottish can use it. So We people should be proud and happy just of the fact that kilt associated with Scotland and recognized as man garment not a COSTUME!, and that gives us opportunely to wear it without confrontation from the public side. So I'll say it Scotland The Brave - All The Way, Sir!
PS. I just had conversation with young gent who was about to explode arguing with me on the same subject. He was very strait about restricting kilt wear to Scott only. But come on guys!, it's hard to find 100% pure Scottish here in North America and people identifying them selfs by the first language or country they came from(well as far as I know at least my wife does, she says she's Russian(her 1st language), but in fact - Polish-Jewish).I have 6 blood lines in my stream myself.
Well, maybe everything I said is obvious to any one on this forum, I just felt I have say it.

And don't forget Kilts night tomorrow (first Thursday of each month) at Doolin's: Granville and Nelson in downtown Vancouver. Most of us are there by 9 o'clock. Hope you'll cross the bridge and join us!

Thanks, Alex. Sorry, I don't understand that. I'm guessing that means either that you are/were a sailor or love dark blue.

I've been thinking a lot about the "staying power" of the Scottish kilt. When it was regularly worn attire, only a certain percentage of the population of a small country wore them. I have no idea what the population was at the time but I'm sure it wasn't a significant percentage of the world.
Comparing it to the similar clothing of other countries, I wonder why the kilt stuck around so long and not other forms of dress. The fustanella is a good example because it is essentially the same as a kilt: a pleated skirt for men. Throughout history, the Greeks were more numerous and their culture was more widely dispersed than the Highland Scots so why did their version of the "man-skirt" basically disappear and the kilt rose to preeminance?
There are many other cultures much larger than the Highlanders and they have traditional garments that are arguably just as stylish and comfortable as the Scottish kilt and yet they are not as widely accepted throughout the world.
If I put on a Buddhist robe and walked down the street, people would look at me like I was nuts (maybe not around here since there is actually a temple full of monks nearby who walk the streets in their robes) but I put on a kilt and nobody questions my sanity unless it's -20F out.
How many people not of Bavarian descent choose to get married in lederhosen? Compare that to the number of non-Scots who choose to get married in a kilt. Or, choose any other national dress and see how many people not steeped heavily in that culture wear it for any occasion.
I am just amazed at how the spread of kilt-wearing has completely overwhelmed it's seemingly destined-for-obscurity origins amongst the savages of Scotland to become a garment of choice in several cultures.
There are 10 kinds of people in the world...
Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

And there aren't many, if any, in Scotland either. Your typical Scot is the same admixture of nationalities and races as your typical North American. The difference seems to be that while Norte Americanos are quite comfortable with having an Italian granny (or whatever), far too many Scots confuse a sense of nationhood with belonging to a race, and are unwilling to admit that no Scotsman is "pure-bred". If all Scots were 100% "ethnic" Scots they'd have a brain the size of a golf ball and both eyes in a common socket. Kinda like those folks up in Glen Whatchamacallit.

Yes, but I think it is the remoutness from the Motherland makes us seeking for a proof and connection of belongingness. Besides, jeans are chip and durable no wander they are popular, can you imagine mid class hiking or gardening in english style casual outfit, that as expensive as formal one?
