    The House of Bruar

    Hello, all.

I received a substantial bonus from my employer last October, and had a tough time deciding how to spend it. That the money would feed my kilt addiction was clear, but the details too a while to iron out.

Inspired by Hamish, I purchased and recently received my bespoke House of Bruar tweed kilt in their 16oz windowpane tweed. They stock off-the-peg kilts in standard sizes, but I requested a custom kilt and they replied with a small added charge. Very reasonable, I think.

The construction (machine sewn) is absolutely top-notch. Since it's a tweed and not a tartan the bottom is hemmed, which adds even more mass and swing to the finely spaced pleats. The lining is perfectly sewn, as is every other seam on the kilt. The quality exceeds my expectations by far, and I'm usually a tough guy to please. The fit and finish are absolutely perfect. (It looks long in the pics, but I think it's the camera angle.)

It will take a while to save up for another kilt from The House of Bruar, but their top-notch quality and excellent customer service guarantees I'll be a return customer. I hope to someday pick up one from their store in person!

Also shown in these pictures are my sporran and custom-tooled belt from Leather Sporrans (http://www.leathersporran.co.uk/). Here again, I can't speak highly enough to the quality, workmanship, and customer service. When it is time to expand my sporran collection, they'll certainly receive my business.

Finally, I'm also showing off my hand-knit hose. This is my second pair of hose, finished about two months after I learned to knit. (See? Anyone can do it!) I'm currently designing another pair to complement this tweed kilt, and will post pics when they're done.

Take care, all. And happy kilting.

Congratulations, and thanks for the reviews.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Very nice! These tweed kilts seem to becoming more and more popular.

One question, is it just the tweed material that puts this in the "non-traditional" category?

A beautiful kilt, I personally don't wear non tartan but that is my choice. For those who do that tweed is really out of this world, congrats on the new addition.

Looks good - it appears to be the only kilt they do but the price is very reasonable for a tweed.

Of course being machine sewn it wouldn't qualify as a "Scottish kilt" according to Howie Nicholsby....

    House of Bruar

I have exactly the same kilt ! And it is gorgeous. I love tweed kilts. House of Bruary did not quite get the length right and it is about half an inch too short ( I have had it for over a year) but it is such a nice kilt I did not want to send it back to them, so I kept it and wear it as it is. In fact I decided just last week to have it altered, so it is currently with a local alterations lady having the hem let down a little (cheaper thah buying a new kilt).

Actually Trefor, you are correct - in one respect: The 'Windowpane' tweed, as elegantly worn here by Bob, IS the only kilt The House of Bruar sells 'off the peg'. However, they will make a kilt to special order in any of their range of tweeds. These are what they offer:

I now have two of their beautiful tweed kilts: the Windowpane was off-the-peg three years ago, and the Erskine was a special order last November.

    Take care,
    Ham.
