Should you feel insulted?
This most likely has been discussed before but i'm throwing it out there anyway.
How do you respond when someone says to you "Nice skirt"
Should you really be insulted if someone says nice skirt?
Before you belt someone, its possible they meant it as a compliment.
After all,the modern day kilt is a skirt even though its considered a mans garment is it not.
Than again, maybe you should consider how its said and by whom.
Take for instance a couple of punk kids in a mall calling it a skirt and laughing at you (I've had this happen)
I have allso had an elderly gentleman ask "Why are you wearing a skirt?"
I have allso had two very elderly ladies snicker an look at each other in horror while my wife an I were shoping for yard plants at Lowes. My wife and I just laughed that one off,but i had two totally different responces to the first two above.
How have you handled your kilt being called a skirt?
I know this has bound to have happened to all that have worn the kilt for any length of time.

Cheers to that.
I don't really care anymore either. Usually all I say it "Thank you, it's a kilt", if they push the issue any farther than that then it all depends. I usually keep walking though and don't stop to engage in conversation.
Most people in this world judge by appearance in some way or another. Whether you are a kid with a mohawk, someone with tattooes and piercings, or long hair, someone is going to judge you before you even open your mouth. It's unfortunate but true.
People who don't deal well with people who aren't "Normal" these people tend to have adverse reactions to when they see a guy in a kilt. They immediately must establish a pecking order to confirm to themselves that they are "better" than them.
Fortunately, most of the attention that is recieved is pleasant and welcome. You've got to be willing to take both sides though, because they will inevitably come. Because when you wear a Kilt, you automatically become a more approachable person for some reason. Whether that be good attention or bad. I think the best thing we can do it not react badly and give them reason to lash out more often.
Just my two cents.
Slainte!

What Ted said pretty much summs up my attitude anymore. When you are old, fat, bearded, wear an ear-ring, AND a kilt, eventually (if not before) you get hardened to the remarks. I must say that I haven't had very many people say that to me.
I am slow to take offense...... I think the vast majority of people who would say "Nice skirt." just do so to get a rise out of the kilt wearer. Why should I give them the satisfaction? If it's a person who doesn't know any better, then educate them - "A rose by any name would smell as sweet!" - A kilt by any name is still a kilt, and we know, so why worry about it?
I think the best response to it is - Shake your head, smile and say- - "Thanks!"

I've always felt it better to take the high road. Even if it's obvious that someone is trying to be insulting, what good does it do to get upset about it. By doing that, you have given the other person the power in the encounter.
I don't believe in getting confrontational unless I or someone else is in danger. People insulting or laughing at me doesn't really bother me that much. I know who I am and someone else's insecurity is not going to change that.
I think a lot of people here have to grow a little thicker skin. Sometimes when someone says "nice skirt" they really are trying to give a compliment, but don't know any better. Just say thanks, and if you can, gently correct them. That way, instead of a confrontation, you can have an intellectual exchange.
For those who are trying to insult you, ignore them. They're not worth the trouble.

Could'nt agree more Dave.
I think wearing the kilt allways remain the gentleman and it will show our pride.

Happened just the other night. Couple of College age men, rather big athletic sorts, don't you know. "Nice skirt!" My response? "Thanks, it's not my favorite, though. That's the one with the big poodle embroidered on the apron."

I'm laughing because a thought just popped into my mind. The other side of the people who go around insulting others, are the people who go around waiting to be insulted. I guess you just have to try to get the two kinds together so they cansil each other out...
