Behind the Walls Kilted...? Anyone??
So I'm wondering if any contract workers, volunteers, or teachers have ever been allowed behind the walls of a prison, or even jail, while kilted.
How about any kilted visitors to a prison or jail visitation area where contact is allowed?
I can say I've been to jail kilted in a visitor's area where there is no contact. Was a through the glass with a little voice opening like at a boxoffice type visitation booth.
Is there a frontier to be conquered still lurking out there?
We know there are correction and detention officers who are kilted on their own time away from work...but has anyone ever made it "inside" kilted?

Yes and No. I've never visited a formal jail kilted but my work with the court service often took me into our small local prison in Hawick to deal with individual custody cases while wearing my black kilt. This prison is the only custody suite in the Scottish Borders and is classified as "legalised police cells" where prisoners can only be detained for a maximum of seven days and in practice the longest detentions are normally Friday till Monday. Any longer remands or sentences are transported to Edinburgh if male or Stirling if female.

Same here.
Though, if some one dear to me (which I have a hard time believing would happen) were staying there, I would visit.
Other than that - not a place I would like to be.

Actually, it's pretty interesting. Just when you think there might be a dull moment, something happens that is better than fiction. What amazes me is the number of inmates that come from normal families, and just get caught in the system. Usually, alcohol or drug related and then spiral deeper and deeper. There are even some that bring a tear to my jaded eye, like the guy yesterday we booked in who was a level one sex offender, but was also a Downes Syndrome kid functioning on about a 10 year old level, who had been raped himself as a kid. Some days life just isn't fair.

You're right - sometimes life isn't fair.
I'm sure it can be quite interesting. I think the hardest thing for me would be to stand in the place and realize the lack of freedom that exists. I don't think I would do well in a cage, or doing the same thing over and over. I like a little variety in my life.

Yes, very little control over your environment. When I talk to young folks who are on a fast track to getting into trouble, I always ask them how life would be if they couldn't order pizza. Most guys sleep about 20 hours a day.

I haven't worn a kilt the few times I've visited, but I don't think I would, at least not to a regular prison as opposed to a local jail. It would just potentially open too many other problems to deal with for me to want to try it.
If you do go to a real maximum security faciilty kilted, let us know how it goes. Frankly, I have enough to worry about without that.
Good luck, my friend.
