    Jacobites: Meeting 09-30-08

    Well, we had our September meeting last evening and it was a success. Four new persons showed up and seemed to be committed to our cause by the end of the evening.

    Our cause:

    To promote Scottish and Irish Culture, history, genealogy, crafts, food, music, etc.. In as accurate a way as possible.

    The Saltire was flown outside to signal the meeting place.

    A new Kilt (made by me) was delivered!

    Some of our usual suspects: Aaron (Celtic Cowboy) & George (gmacman)

    Looks like a good group (and a great menu!). I'm just curious, though. When you say "In as accurate a way as possible" what exactly do you mean?

    The usual.. trying to combat "old wives tales." I seem to keep running into them, all those misconceptions.

    - I triple check every lesson for accuracy.

    - Only use credible sources.

    - Use visual aides.

    ==================================

    A little advice and experience for those considering starting a similar group:
    A casual and social meal before the lesson allows people to meet everyone, relax, etc...

    Doing a British Isles or European menu also helps introduce people to unique foods that most people learn they actually like. A "pot luck" is the way to go in my opinion, it allows folks to sample a multi-menu.

    Yeah, but wasn't corned beef introduced to the Irish by the Jews in New York?

    That looks like a great way to teach history.

    I'm not sure what your deal is, but what our group is about is the history and genealogy. I didn't make the corn beef, it is a pot luck and was brought by someone else who has many food allergies and is one of those few Irish or Scottish dishes (whether they be modern or traditional) that him and his wife both can have.
