    World War I

With this being the 90th anniversary of the end of WWI, many news organizations are running commemorative programs marking the occasion. Reporting On Scotland has posted a few excerpts of their special programming here:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7707909.stm

The first story involves a son that has preserved his fathers kilt worn at the Somme. It's pretty powerful.

    Christmas in the Trenches...

I happened to be searching for information on the Joplin, Missouri Public Library's web site today and noticed that their library has a display about the 1914 Christmas Truce:

The very first picture of the display features a kilt in the Government Sett and an Argylls glengarry.

    Lest we forget,

I know it's been brought up here many times, but the film Joyeux Noel is wonderful, albeit highly dramatized.

    Lest We Forget

As a point of intrest, Kansas City Missouri has a wonderful WWI memorial and museum. It is currently being proprosed to become the National WWI memorial site.

No longer proposed -- it is the national WWI memorial for the USA:

In the U.S., WWI is under-appreciated. Granted, we only had about 18 months of it, compared to the four years for most others involved (and the fewer casualties).
Still, the stories and images haunt us.
The photos from the library display struck me strongly. Thanks, Todd.

For those who have the opportunity, the World War I museum in Kansas City, MO is an amazing tribute to those who served in WWI. About half the exhibit is from before the US involvement, then the rest is after we joined. It's well worth the trip.

Our PR guy (Clan Mackay USA) wears his grandfather's kilt from WWI (he was a piper w/ the Royal Scots Fusiliers, 2nd Volunteer Battalion).

One of my pleasures in life was about 20 yrs ago being friends with my sister's neighbor who was a two war vet (WWI & WWII) and listening to his stories. He gave me a bayonet he took off a dead German at Normandy (later war, I know) that I still treasure.

I hope the world never forgets, but as the vets die off & the past becomes more distant there is always that danger. That is why it up to the present to keep it "alive".

    Thanks for sharing this link.
